FRIDAY

Celebrate German heritage — The Tomball German Heritage Festival returns all weekend, March 28-March 30! Free parking and free admission to boot.  Enjoy five stages of live music, ethnic and festival food, arts and crafts, folk dancers, street performers, carnival, petting zoo, German church service, 175 street vendors, and more.  Hours are Friday (6 pm – 10 pm), Saturday (10 am – 10 pm) and Sunday (10 am – 6 pm)  The German Heritage Festival is located in Old Town Tomball near 201 S. Elm Street.

SATURDAY

Go fly a kite — Don’t miss the Hermann Park Kite Festival in honor of the park’s Centennial year! The free family event from 10 am – 5 pm features kite making, kids’ craft zone, kite contest, jugglers, magicians, student performances, and more. As expected, parking is extremely limited so folks are encouraged to take METRORail or ride their bike. Located in Hermann Park at Miller Hill and the Jones Reflecting Pond.

Clean up Texas waterways — Get ready to work at Trash Bash 2014, the largest statewide annual event to clean up Texas waterways. Volunteering is available at one of 16 locations in the area: from Brays Bayou, White Oak Bayou, Cypress Creek and more. Find all the participating locations online here. Volunteering is a half-day event with some free perks: lunch, t-shirt, giveaways, entertainment, and a great feeling of helping the environment. Times vary by location. Last year, more than 5,000 volunteers collected 49 tons of trash.

Tour A&M Vet Day Open House — The Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine Open House is a great annual event for “wanna-be” vets and kids who love animals. Head to College Station March 29 from 9 am– 4 pm right on the Texas A&M campus.  Tour portions of the small and large animal clinics, see exotic reptiles, watch live surgery, pet animals in a petting zoo, experience Teddy Bear surgery, chat with experts, and get a photo with Reveille VIII. chalk art in katyWatch creativity — If you love street art chalk festivals, check out the 1st annual Chalk HeART and Health by Christ Clinic in Katy. The free event (1 pm – 4 pm), features chalk artists, live performances, face painting and more. This is a fundraiser for Christ Clinic, a medical clinic in Katy serving the uninsured in Katy/West Houston. Located at Central Green Park, La Centerra, 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd.

Kick off spring — Get outdoors and enjoy the weather at Spring Fest in Old Town Spring. The Saturday event features live music, washer tournament, meet and greet with the Charlie Daniels Band and more. Streets will be open to pedestrians only (Midway & Gentry) to enjoy the festival. Beer and wine samplings will be available for a fee. Gates open at 10 am with parking available at Preservation Park.

Enjoy paws in the park — It’s all things pets at the 20th anniversary of Paws in the Park. The annual weekend event in Pearland Saturday and Sunday includes a Dock Dog competition, costume contests, canine shows, agility demos, hamster balls, and rescue groups. The fun is located at Independence Park from 10 am – 4 pm both days.

OSMTexasWatch a TV premiere featuring Montrose — Catch the premiere party of One Square Mile: Celebrate Montrose, a PBS documentary that explores the diversity of Texas by profiling one square mile in different cities. Montrose is the feature area in this week’s show airing for the first time Sunday. But the special event is Saturday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, 3 pm – 5 pm. The Montrose episode features The Rothko Chapel, Just Dinner, St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, and Jill Jarvis (owner of Big Kid Small City local resource web site). Enjoy music outdoors Live at Night at Waterway Square continues for the spring season Saturday, 6 pm – 8 pm. The Marlin Bando Band performs at this outdoor setting in The Woodlands. Located between Timberloch Place and Lake Robbins Drive. Prices vary for parking in the area.

Dance at CityCentre — CityCentre is always a fun destination! Saturday features the return of Dancing Under the Stars ranging from Jazz, Latin, and R&B to today’s hits by Next Level Band  from 7 pm – 10 pm. CityCentre is located at 800 Town & Country Blvd.

SUNDAY

Celebrate your pet — Head to Discovery Green Sunday for Pet-A-Palooza from 1 pm – 4 pm. The free event includes a cutest pet costume contest, pet agility and demonstrations, giveaways, and more. Pack up your pooch and head downtown for some fun! Located at 1500 McKinney.

Enjoy a concert in the park — The popular Concert in the Park returns every Sunday this spring in The Woodlands, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm. This weekend features the 4th annual Sandcastle Building Contest and music by Swing Thing. Located at 2505 Lake Woodlands Drive.
