The weekend is almost here! Will the rain stay awhile for outdoor fun? Here is a snapshot of a few free events and activities to enjoy with your family and friends:
Get creative at Rienzi’s Family Workshop — Arabian Nights is the theme for this Sunday’s Family Workshop at Rienzi, a European house that’s part of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. The workshop July 22 from 1 pm – 3:30 pm features a marionette performance featuring Aladdin and Princess Jasmine in a story from “Tales of the Arabian Nights.” The family workshop encourages children to create and show off their own puppets. Admission is free, but space is limited. Call 713.639.7800 to reserve a spot.
Glow at Zumba — Dress in your whites and neons for the free Zumba Glow Party at the downtown Tellepsen Family YMCA, July 20, 5:30 – 7 pm. Come have a blast and get fit, too. Tellepsen is located at 808 Pease.
Learn to salsa dance — Enjoy free salsa dance lessons at Latin Beats every Friday night at the Downtown Aquarium. From 7 pm – 11 pm you can learn salsa dancing from professional dance instructors. The Aquarium is located at 410 Bagby at Memorial.
Get healthy — Attend a free community health fair Saturday, July 21, 11 am – 2 pm at Mosaic Community Covenant Church. Get free dental consultations, blood pressure screenings, chair massages, spinal and nerve assessments, face painting and more. Special appearances by Sugar Land Fire Department, H-E-B Buddy mascot, Sweet Tomatoes Sweetie mascot, Houston SPCA, and more! Love a musical – Yankee Doodle Dandy is on stage at Miller Outdoor Theatre Friday through Sunday, July 20-22, at 8:15 pm. This is TUTS’ free annual summer musical for more than 40 years. Free tickets for covered reserved seats are available at the box office on performance day from 10:30 am – 1 pm. Or just grab a blanket and enjoy seating on the big hill. Miller Outdoor Theatre is located at 6000 Hermann Park Dr.
Jam to the music: The Level One Band will perform Motown and disco music at the free Keller Williams Concert at Kings Harbor Friday, July 20, from 7 pm -10 pm. At the concert, Blue Star Mothers Houston chapter will be collecting beef jerky and individual powder drink mixes and instant coffee for care packages for the troops. Kings Harbor is at 1660 W. Lake Houston Parkway in Kingwood.
Browse Discovery Green Flea — Houston’s newest outdoor flea market, Discovery Green Flea, hits the evening hours during the summer as Discovery Green Flea by Night, July 21, 6 pm – 10 pm. Browse artful kitsch, vintage items, mid-century modern furniture, recycled and repurposed items and collectibles. Live music by Tianna Hall and the Houston Jazz Band! IKEA Houston will be handing out complimentary shopping bags, to boot! Located at 1500 McKinney.
Craft an Olympic torch — Kids can make their own Olympic torch Saturday, July 21, at Lakeshore Learning’s weekly craft time. Participate each Saturday, 11 am – 3 pm, with a new craft. Houston area locations are 2405 Post Oak Blvd. in the Galleria area, 19032 Gulf Fwy. in Friendswood, and The Woodlands.
Learn all about canning: Williams-Sonoma offers free tech classes each weekend. The theme this weekend features DIY Canning: Tomato Sauce & Salsa. Times vary by location: Sundays at 11 am, 1 pm, Town & Country Village; Sundays at noon, Highland Village; Sundays at 2 pm, The Woodlands Mall; Sundays at noon, Baybrook Mall; plus 11 am Saturday and 1:30 pm Sunday at First Colony Mall. Reservations are recommended to reserve your spot.
