free weekend fun in HoustonThe weekend is almost here. What are your plans? Here is a snapshot of a few free events and activities to enjoy in Houston with family and friends:

FRIDAY

Attend a launch partyLyft Houston is kicking off its new presence in town with a launch party Friday, 6 pm – 10 pm, at Hughes Hangar, 2811 Washington Ave. The evening features local music, food truck, and live artmaking by GONZO247, artist of many of Houston’s amazing murals. Get some free Lyft credit, too, to take advantage of affordable rides on demand in Houston with the Lyft app. RSVP online here. Download the Lyft app to get in the door.

SATURDAY

Get healthy — Take advantage of a free Heart Healthy Screening at North Cypress Medical Center. From 8 am to noon, folks can get free blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings; body mass index; and info related to heart disease and strokes. Located in the North Cypress Conference Center inside the lobby at 21214 Northwest Freeway in Cypress.

Touch a truck — Kids love the Touch a Truck events to get up close to all kinds of big trucks. This event returns to The Woodlands Saturday, 9 am – noon, at Rob Fleming Park. Don’t miss the giant sandbox and the Construction Zone. Located at 6535 Creekside Forest Drive in The Woodlands.

Catch a fish — Families can head north Saturday morning for White Bass Fishing at Jesse H. Jones Park, 8 am to noon. Take advantage of the early spring white bass spawning run. Fishing equipment will not be provided so you must bring your own. Fishing license is required for those over age 17. Reservations are required: 281.446.8588. The park is located in Humble at 20634 Kenswick Dr.

Learn about organic gardening — Enjoy a clinic on the ABCs of Organic Gardening at Cornelius Saturday, 10:15 am. The free clinic features information on the importance of soil, 10 garden pests, and organic solutions to get rid of them. This is offered at both Cornelius locations: 1200 N. Dairy Ashford and 2233 S. Voss.

Party for Mardi Gras — Mardi Gras Galveston kicks off February 21 for two weekends of non-stop fun. There are lots of parades to watch for free including the Golf Cart Parade, Art Car Parade, Colorful Family Parade (noon) and more on Saturday, February 22. Don’t miss the free Family Gras celebration Sunday, February 23, 11 am, where the Entertainment District will be free to the public for two parades, live music and more. Celebrate a birthday — LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch in Katy is celebrating 7 years! The town center destination in Katy is hosting a free birthday bash for the public. The afternoon event, 1 pm – 4 pm, features music, face painting, bounce house, photo booth, prizes, balloon art, clown and more. The first 207 people will receive goodie bags with sweet treats. Located at Heritage Square, 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd.

Browse for summer fun — The 18th annual Camp Fair 2014 will be held again this weekend at two different malls. Saturday, First Colony Mall (10 am – 4 pm) and Sunday at Willowbrook Mall (noon to 5 pm). The event features more than 60 different organizations representing overnight, day camps, sports camps and more for Houston-area kids. Party with Radio Disney — Enjoy an evening of games, dancing, and music with the Road Crew from Radio Disney! Beginning at 6 pm, your favorite songs from Radio Disney artists will be played at Central Green Park in Katy. Play games and win prizes from your favorite Disney Channel and Disney Junior shows. Located at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd. in Katy.

SUNDAY

Celebrate the homestead– Don’t miss The Heritage Society’s free Family Day Sunday, 1 pm – 4 pm, in downtown Houston. Learn how Houstonians lived after they created the city and started building homes of their own. Take a tour of 1823 Old Place, enjoy hands-on activities and crafts, a mock excavation and more. Located at 1100 Bagby.

Listen to accordion showcase — The Big Squeeze Accordion contest is looking for talented accordion players age 21+ throughout Texas. The public is invited to the free event as it travels to Houston Sunday, 2 pm, at the Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts). Finalists will perform in Austin at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in April. Three grand prize winners will receive prizes valued at more than $4,000 each. MECA is located at 1900 Kane Street.
