The weekend is almost here! What are your plans? Here is a snapshot of a few free events and activities to enjoy with your family and friends:
Relive the past – Celebrate pre-1900 Texas history at the annual Homestead Heritage Day, sponsored by Jesse H. Jones Park and Nature Center. Enjoy live folk music, hands-on activities for the kids, blacksmith demonstrations, Civil War re-enactments, old-fashioned games, and hay ride. Enjoy a Mardi Gras boat parade — The Yachty Gras Grand Night Boat Parade returns Saturday, February 9, 7 pm, at the Kemah Boardwalk. Boats will parade down Clear Creek Channel near the Kemah Boardwalk where “krewes” will throw beads and doubloons to parade viewers. Judges will select the best including Best of Show for the Awards Presentation Sunday, February 10, 10 am, at Kemah Boardwalk Aquarium.
Watch a pet and children’s parade — Catch Galveston’s 15th Annual Krewe of Barkus and Meoux (a.k.a. Mardi Gras Pet Parade) Sunday, February 10 at 1 pm. The Firefighter’s Children’s Parade kicks off at 2 pm with fire trucks, costumed kids, and floats. The events kick off at 27th & 28th and Seawall. photo: Posh Pet Portraits
Pamper your plants — If your indoor plants could use some TLC, bring them to Cornelius Nursery for its Repotting Festival, February 9. Use the indoor potting bench in the greenhouse (9 am – 6 pm) plus free premium potting soil, fertilizer, and top dressing required for your spring plants. Attend the free clinic at 10:15 am called Container Gardening. Cornelius Nursery is located at 2233 S. Voss and 1200 N. Dairy Ashford.
Love a lion dance for Lunar New Year — Celebrate the Chinese New Year Saturday, February 9, 1:30 pm, with a traditional Lion Dance at Houston Premium Outlets. Shoppers can take advantage of special red envelope offers (at the Information Center) plus face painting. Located in Cypress at 29300 Hempstead Road. Plus, don’t miss the annual Lunar New Year Festival Saturday, February 9, at the Chinese Community Center. The free fun features dragon and lion dances, food, cultural exhibitions, arts and crafts, outdoor Karaoke stage, talent show, photography, and more. The festivities are 10 am – 4 pm, 9800 Town Park. “Ketchup” with the Wienermobile — The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will stop at several Houston locations this weekend for an up-close and personal look. Plenty of fun including photo ops with the big dog, sneak peek inside, and free wiener whistles for its 76th anniversary. Read my original post for specific locations and times throughout town.
Get heart healthy — Don’t miss the free Heart Healthy Screening Saturday, February 9, 8 am – noon, at North Cypress Medical Center. The screening will include cholesterol/glucose testing, body mass index (BMI), sleep apnea screening, educational information and an opportunity to meet experts. One in every three deaths is from heart disease and stroke, according to CDC. North Cypress is located at 21214 Northwest Freeway. Registration is not required.
Enjoy kid-friendly Mardi Gras fun — It’s Mardi Gras Spirit Day at The Woodlands Mall, Saturday, February 9, 10 am – 4 pm. The fun features family festivities, crafts, interactive entertainment, door prizes, and activities for all ages. Located at the lower level across from JCPenney.
Build a wheel of love — Kids will enjoy another Lowe’s Build & Grow morning craft Saturday, February 9, at 10 am. This weekend’s project is a Wheel of Love, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Get silly at this free flick — A new Sunday night movie series kicks off at The Hay Merchant, a sibling to Underbelly in Montrose, with craft beer and food. This week’s free movie, voted by The Hay Merchant staff, features Starship Troopers, with Fatty Hour food prices. The Hay Market is located at 1100 Westheimer.
