20 Things to Do for Houston Halloween Family Fun + Retail Trick-or-Treating

Houston has plenty to offer for Halloween-themed family fun in October. Check out this round-up of events this weekend and beyond — some of which are free!

** Monster’s Museum of Houston: The Children’s Museum of Houston will turn into a Halloween mecca October 10 – 31  with Monster’s Museum of Houston. Kids can wear their costume and explore the mansion, wander the pumpkin patch for photo opps, complete spooky science experiments, play with slime, paint pumpkins and more. Free trick-or-treating is available weekdays Tuesday – Friday 4 pm – 6 pm, 4 pm – 8 pm Thursdays, and all day on weekends and October 31, 4 pm – 8 pm. Don’t miss Moe’s Monster Mash Bash October 31! Free family admission on Thursdays, October 15, October 22 and October 29, from 5 pm – 8 pm, for Free Family Night. ** Boo on the Boardwalk: Kids can enjoy free Trick-or-Treating at the Kemah Boardwalk retail stores every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in October from 4 pm – 8 pm. Don’t miss the Kid’s Costume Contest October 24, 5 pm. Boo on the Boardwalk also includes live music, outdoor movies, magic shows, and more. Most activities are free, except for rides, Dungeon of Doom Haunted House, and the Little Boo Fun House.

** Zoo Boo at Houston Zoo: It’s a Halloween party that takes over the Houston Zoo October 16-November 1! The annual Zoo Boo at Houston Zoo features lots of kid-friendly fun including trick-or-treating, costume parade, Living Pumpkin Patch, Monster Mural, Monster Mashquerade, and Candy Cave. Enjoy lighter crowds on Fridays from 9 am – 1 pm. Weekend hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 9 am – 4 pm. Zoo Boo is included with Zoo admission: $12 for kids age 2-11 and $16 for adults. Houston Zoo is located in Hermann Park.

** Bass Pro Shops Halloween: Bass Pro Shops proudly sponsors its free Halloween activities, October 24-31. Families can enjoy free crafts, and a free 4×6 photo with the Peanuts Gang. On Friday night October 30 and Halloween night kids are invited to trick-or-treat, and participate in a costume parade. Each participant will also receive a glow in the dark bucket. Bass Pro Shops has two Houston area locations in Katy and Pearland.

** Casper Outdoor Movie: Get in the spirit of Halloween with a free outdoor screening of Casper October 16, 8 pm, at GreenStreet downtown for Friday Flicks on The Lawn. GreenStreet is located at 1201 Fannin.

** Pumpkin Patch Fall Festival:  It’s a full weekend of fun at Pumpkin Patch Fall Festival at Nature Discovery Center, October 17-18. From 11 am – 4 pm enjoy family fun, food, kids’ games, wagon rides, and photo opps at the pumpkin patch.  Free admission, with an additional fee for crafts and games. Pumpkins are available for purchase, ranging from $3-$8. Free parking and shuttle.

** Howl-O-Ween: Head to the Howl-O-Ween Dog Walk, Costume Contest, and Pet Expo at Central Green Park at La Centerra October 17. Enjoy a dog walk, costume contest, goodie bags and prizes for you and your pet. Sponsored by Citizens for Animal Protection. Admission is $25 online to participate in the dog walk/costume contest or $35 at the door. Located at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd.

** Hocus Pocus Pops Concert with Houston Symphony: Join the Houston Symphony October 23 at Hocus Pocus Pops Concert featuring bone-chilling music and spooky sounds. Seating in the lawn and mezzanine is free. Kids and adults are invited to dress in costume for a chance to walk on stage during the concert. Gates open at 6 pm with concert at 7:30 pm. Located at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands.

** Houston Humane Society Fall Festival:  The Houston Humane Society is hosting its Fall Festival October 24, starting at 11 am. If you’ve been looking to adopt a new pet, take advantage of free adoptions on select pets! Face painting, bounce house, photos, pumpkin painting and more will be also be available. Located at 14700 Almeda.

ArBOOretum 2014** ArBOOretum: It’s a family fun day at Houston Arboretum and Nature Center’s ArBOOretum October 24 with public admission noon – 4 pm. Members-only can attend 10 am – noon. The day features hay rides, pumpkin decorating, baby animal petting zoo, hay maze, live owls, and more. Don’t miss the Trick-or-Treat Trail where kids can learn about different creatures out on a nature trail. Admission is $15 for ages 3 and up, with a $2 discount on advance tickets. Members are free. Free Houston Wave shuttle from 4801 Woodway garage. The HANC parking lot will be closed with no drop off or pick up at the Arboretum entrance.

** Howl-O-Ween Fest  — Cypress’ Bridgeland sponsors the annual favorite Howl-O-Ween Fest October 24, 10 am – 4 pm. Enjoy pumpkin decorating, trick or treating, food trucks, kids’ activities, farmers market, Pooch Fashion Show with emcee Casey Curry, and more. Don’t miss performances from Todd Oliver and his “talking” dogs (America’s Got Talent semi-finalists), Panfilov’s Performing Pets and high-flying antics of Houston Disc Dogs.

** Halloween Town — Sugar Land Town Square brings back its favorite Halloween Town Sunday, October 25, 4 pm – 8 pm. Kids in costume will love jack-o-lanterns, candy stations, and Halloween characters roaming through the area. A free shuttle service will run from Mercer Stadium at 16403 Lexington Blvd.

** Tricks & Treats Among the Trees: This free event out in nature, Tricks & Treats Among the Trees, is held Saturday, October 24, 3:30 pm – 7 pm at Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center. The afternoon features hay rides, free crafts, games, trick-or-treat trail and more. Located at 20634 Kenswick in Humble.

** Fall Funday: Enjoy a Fall Funday & Pumpkin Carving Workshop at Smither Park October 24, 11 am – 2 pm.  Events include interactive art, music, photography workshops, live music and local artists, kid-friendly games and more! Bring your own pumpkin and work with local artists on carving your best pumpkin yet! Free (suggested $5 donation). Located at 2441 Munger.

** Ghostly Gardens at Moody Gardens: Head to Galveston for this free Halloween-related family event. Ghostly Gardens at Moody Gardens offers a number of special treats for kids Sunday, October 25, including free trick-or-treating, face painting, creepy crafts and a costume contest for kids 12 and under. Prizes will be awarded for best costume. The event is 7 am to noon. Dress at least one family member in costume and pay only $5 admission, per person, to the various attractions at Moody Gardens.

** Trick or Treat Trail: An annual favorite in The Woodlands, Trick or Treat Trail is October 25, 3 pm – 6 pm, with trick-or-treating, costume contests, children’s activities, games, vendor booths and more. This is located at Town Green Park along The Woodlands Waterway.

DG scream on the green** Discovery Green: This citywide Halloween party, Scream on the Green, is a free event for the whole family October 30, 6 pm – 10 pm. Kids will love the face painting, Scary-oke, and more. Dress up the whole family for the costume contest with major prizes. Categories range from infants to adults and dogs! Catch the free outdoor movie, The Book of Life, beginning at 7:30 pm. Discovery Green is located downtown at 1500 McKinney.

October 31

** Tricks, Treats & T-Rex at Sugar Land HMNS: Discover the scary side of science at this annual family event. Houston Museum of Natural Science, Sugar Land presents Tricks, Treats & T-Rex, October 31, 10 am – noon, with  a Butterfly Garden Maze, Costume Parade, and even a pumpkin toss! Costumes are certainly encouraged! Price is $15 for adults and $12 for kids. Located at the Sugar Land Houston Museum of Natural Science, 13016 University Blvd in Sugar Land. 

** Deer Park’s Halloween Carnival: It’s the Deer Park annual Halloween Carnival, October 31, 2 pm – 5 pm. It features pumpkin carving, carnival rides, costume contests, and more. A small fee is associated with each activity. Located at the Jimmy Burke Activity Center.

** VFW Park: Katy’s newest Halloween celebration, Halloween in the Park, begins at 5 pm with games, trick-or-treating, costume contest, bounce house, carnival games, face painting, and more. Located at VFW Park, 6202 George Bush Drive in Katy.

Halloween Retail Trick-or-Treating (October 31)

** Bass Pro Shops Halloween: Kids are invited to trick-or-treat at Bass Pro Shops October 31 and participate in a costume parade. Each participant will also receive a glow in the dark bucket. Bass Pro Shops has two Houston area locations in Katy and Pearland.

** CityCentre: CityCentre offers Halloween Trick-or-Treat October 31, 5 pm – 7 pm, at Houston’s outdoor shopping district. Pick up a map in the plaza for participating retailers. Alvin Gee Photography will be on site to capture the memory with a 5″ x 7″ photo (in exchange for a $10 donation to Texas Children’s Hospital). Located at 800 Town and Country Blvd. The event is rain or shine!

** Greenspoint Mall: Greenspoint Mall is putting on the fun for kids at Mall-O-Ween,October 31, 6 pm – 8 pm. The evening features store-to-store trick-or-treating, live music, costume contest, fortune telling, face painting, and balloon art. First 1,000 kids will get a free trick-or-treat bag with treats. The costume contest, located in the Food Court beginning at 7 pm, is for babies to adult. Greenspoint Mall is located at I-45 and Greens Road.

** Houston Premium Outlets: Families in Cypress will enjoy Halloween fun again with Houston Premium Outlet’s Trick-or-Treat Off the Streets October 31, 5 pm – 7 pm. Enjoy retail trick-or-treating for kids 13 and under plus a performance by Steppin Time Performing Arts. Located at 29300 Hempstead Rd. in Cypress.

** Outlets at Conroe: Enjoy Halloween fun October 31 with Halloween Trick or Treating at Outlets at Conroe. Kids can enjoy trick or treating from 4 pm – 6 pm at the Outlet shops from participating merchants. Free cupcakes from Cuppie Cakes and Sweets while supplies last. Located at 1111 League Line Road in Conroe.

** Pearland Town Square: Enjoy Trick or Treat on Our Street October 31 with free retail trick-or-treating 5 pm – 7 pm, at Pearland Town Square, while supplies last. Kids must be in costume.

** San Jacinto Mall: Folks in Baytown can head to Mall-O-Ween October 31, at San Jacinto Mall for store-to-store trick-or-treating (2 pm – 3:30 pm) and a costume contest at 4 pm. Contestants must bring a canned good to registration (2 pm to 3:30 pm) in the Food Court. San Jacinto Mall is located at I-10 at Garth Road in Baytown, Texas.

** Tanger Outlet: Don’t miss the Outlet’s annual Trick-or-Treating October 30. Kids 12 and under are invited to Trick-or-Treat on the Tanger Street 5 pm – 7 pm. {NOTE: this is October 30 not October 31!} Located at 5885 Gulf Freeway in Texas City.
