Looking for a great after school program for your kids? Look no further than the YMCA Houston!

September is here and kids are back in school. While children and teens are excited to get back to the classroom, parents may wonder how their children can stay engaged in learning and constructive play after that last school bell rings.

If you’re looking for a place for your child to go to grow and learn after the typical school hours, the YMCA of Greater Houston After School program provides youth with a place to go to build their character, social skills and confidence.

The Y’s After School program provides affordable program options at more than 200 sites across Houston, including more than 25 school districts and charter schools. For many students, their time spent in the Y’s After School program is part of their fondest memories. For parents, the convenience of the on-site program, which includes care on early dismissal and in-service days, is hard to beat.
The Y’s After School program creates opportunities for kids to connect and achieve their goals through indoor and outdoor play, academic lessons and social interactions. The Y offers a wide-range of programs for infants and toddlers to elementary and high school.
During these uncertain times, the YMCA of Greater Houston is doing everything it can to keep kids safe and healthy and has implemented extensive COVID-19 safety guidelines for their programs. In addition to their health-focused approach, kids in the After School program will be met with a caring, educated and well-trained staff who lead activities that promote both cooperation and character development. Even more, each staff member is CPR and First Aid certified, and must pass through an extensive background check.

So, what’s a typical day at the Y look like for students? Throughout their time in the YMCA After School program, a variety of structured activities are offered that introduce positive social interactions. During Y Community Time, children are welcomed and given a healthy snack to give them the energy they need to socialize and work through academic tasks!

Once fueled up and settled in, typical programs at the Y include:

  • Brain Power Hour: time for students to work on homework, and other academic tasks
  • Exploration: Depending on the age, students participate in hands-on activities to help reinforce learning concepts.
  • Enrichment: Are your kids interested in music, art, theater, and crafts? During this portion of the Y After School program, these enrichment activities are offered to help encourage these activities.
  • Energize: this portion of the day allows students to get out the pent-up energy of the day with outdoor or gym play.
