From the Texas Hill Country apple orchards to farms just outside of Houston, there are plenty of family-friendly spots where you can enjoy fresh fruit, hayrides, and seasonal treats. In these orchards, you’ll find some of the best ways to experience fall in Texas.


Craving a scenic escape with some of Texas’ sweetest apples? I suggest looking no further than Top of Texas Orchards, nestled in the heart of West Texas apple country. Here, you’ll find classic apple picking in Texas paired with stunning views of the high plains.

For those closer to Houston, Effurd Orchards makes a perfect family day trip, with not only apples but peaches, blueberries, and homemade ice creams that capture the taste of the season.

Each orchard offers a different kind of adventure, from breathtaking landscapes to fun farm experiences, making them must-visit destinations during apple season.

Effurd Orchards is a well-known family-owned farm, and a favorite of mine, in East Texas and one of the best apple-picking destinations in the state. Located about four hours from Houston, the orchard has been operating since 1979 and offers U-Pick apples, peaches, blueberries, and other seasonal produce, making it a popular day trip for families.

  • Amenities: Small market with fresh fruit, jams, and homemade treats
  • Variety of Apple Types: Golden Delicious, Fuji, Granny Smith
  • Distance from Houston: 4 hours northeast
  • Insider Tips: Visit during peak peach season for an even wider variety of produce.

Love Creek Orchards is a beloved Hill Country destination for apple picking (when in season), baked treats, and family fun. If U-Pick isn’t available due to weather, the Apple Store and bakery still offer fresh pies, apple snacks, and seasonal attractions.

Don’t miss out on their beloved apple cinnamon ice cream! I think it’s one of the best apple treats out here in Texas.

  • Amenities: Bakery with pies and treats, Apple Store, hayrides, petting zoo, straw maze, pumpkin patch (seasonal)
  • Variety of Apple Types: Gala, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Fuji, Pink Lady

Sonlight Apple Orchard

Sonlight Apple Orchard offers a nostalgic Hill Country apple-picking experience at its historic barn. With 10 different apple varieties ripening throughout the season, visitors can return multiple times for a fresh experience.

You can even stay overnight at their charming Apple Cottage B&B.

Note: The place is temporarily closed due to severe crop loss from extreme freeze and drought. Check back in for future seasons.

Top of Texas Orchards sits in the heart of West Texas apple country and is celebrated for producing some of the sweetest apples in the state, especially varieties like my favorites, Granny Smith and Jonagold, making it well worth the long scenic drive from Houston.
