Running from right now through Monday, May 31, the Big Walls Big Dreams Refresh art festival is bringing an incredible infusion of colorful street art to Houston.

Artists are already hard at work painting more than 20 new murals of all different styles to revitalize and add some visual flair to several Houston neighborhoods.

Though this is the first time the Big Walls Big Dreams festival has come to Houston, it was first established in 2013 in Miami Beach. “Refresh” is the theme of this installment of the series of art festivals.

“Our vision for the Big Walls Big Dreams festival was to use the power of street art to refresh Houston neighborhoods and celebrate the vibrancy of the city,” said Elia Quiles, a principal of UP Art Studio, which created and produced the event.

She hopes that the festival will make people want to spend time outside and be more active. After more than a year of being cooped up inside, people are still a little hesitant. She wants to do what she can to help Houstonians feel more comfortable being out and about.

“The isolation of this pandemic has been tough on everyone,” said Elia’s husband, Noah Quiles, co-founder of the firm. “The Big Walls Big Dreams mural festival is here to bring fresh energy and optimism to our city and nourish our dreams for better times ahead.”

Houston locals have the extra perk of getting to see the murals take shape before their eyes. If you would like to watch the artists at work or see the murals for yourself, you can find mural locations, artist names, and other information on bigwallsbigdreams.com.

The full schedule for the festival will include live music, family-friendly entertainment, and tours, both guided and self-guided. If you would like to go on a biking tour of the murals, Houston B-Cycle is offering free bicycle rentals (for 30 minutes at a time) to tour the mural festival sites through May with the code BIGWALLS.
