College football bowl season doesn’t start until the end of the year, but there’s a game in Houston this weekend that’s sure to bring a similar type of atmosphere.
The Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats in the Battle of the Piney Woods — one of college football’s oldest rivalries. The 94th game in this series kicks off at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at NRG Stadium in Houston, 8825 Kirby Drive.
There are still plenty of seats left at prices that are budget-conscious — even for the biggest of families. You should plan ahead for parking, though, which runs $20 per spot at the gate. If you’re going with some family friends, plan on carpooling to cut down on costs. Parking is cash only.
As mentioned, this rivalry goes back nearly 100 years now and is the second-longest rivalry in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly known as D-1A teams). Sam Houston State leads the series 56-35-2, following a 54-21 shellacking in last year’s meeting, which marked a record eight-game win streak in the series.
Sam Houston State brings a 3-1 record into Saturday’s game. Stephen F. Austin nabbed its first win of the season last week, defeating Lamar 24-17. The Lumberjacks are hoping to turn their luck around this weekend. Since 2000, they’ve only come away with three victories over their rival.
A unique rivalry comes with a unique trophy. Since 2007, the winner of the Battle of the Piney Woods goes home with a 21-pound solid cedar trophy that displays replica pistols attached to a tombstone, along with logos from both universities.
The pistols represent the rivalry’s prior trophy — a pair of actual Colt Walker Pistols. The guns had been awarded since 1976.
The Battle of Piney Woods also extends into basketball, where Stephen F. Austin holds a slight all-time lead, 95-94.
But this weekend, it’s all about football. Get your tickets here and experience the excitement firsthand this weekend!
