It’s the holiday season and that means college hoops is in full swing. A number of big-time tournaments take place in December, including “The Battleground 2K19,” a six-team, three-game billing that includes top-notch basketball, but also features a charity component for a good cause.
The Toyota Center in Houston is the venue for The Battleground 2K19, which takes place Wednesday, Dec. 18, and features some of the top teams in the country. Tickets, which can be purchased here, range from only $15 to $150 for courtside seats.
Starting off this year’s marquee matchups are a 4:30 p.m. matchup between the Oregon State Beavers and the University of Texas San Antonio Roadrunners; and a 6:45 p.m. matchup between the Utah State Aggies (a top 25 team) and the South Florida Bulls.
This year’s headlining game, which tips off at 9 p.m., is between the Baylor University Bears, an AP top-25 team, and the University of Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks, which currently is in first place in the Ohio Valley.
As mentioned, this special three-game event benefits a special cause: Athletes Against Abuse. This initiative aims to inspire athletes to use their ability, notoriety, and influence to empower and improve the lives of those around them — and bring awareness to child abuse across the nation. The goal is to empower children to overcome abuse through access to support networks, but also through activities that help boost their confidence.
While in Houston, athletes from the six teams will spend time with local children’s organizations, mentoring, supporting and encouraging children who have recently experienced abuse or abandonment.
The college basketball season is off to a wild start, with No. 1 seeds falling to underdogs with potential Cinderella stories to tell come this March. Pair that with a good cause, and you have no reason to not make it out for a fun Wednesday night activity.
