The pastries he develops are wonderfully flaky, picture-perfect, and innovative. Try the chocolate and peanut butter scone, the dark milk chocolate croissant, or pistachio baklava croissant. Macaron By Patisse is the go-to bakery in Houston for delicious (and aesthetically pleasing) macarons. The crisp  and meringue cookies are paired with creamy fillings to make endless flavor combinations. Favorites include the lavender white chocolate, cappuccino, salted caramel, and birthday cake flavors. The macarons are baked fresh daily and can also be ordered layered with gelato. Most macarons are naturally gluten free because they’re made with almond meal, but the menu has labels on the ones that aren’t.

The menu includes by-the-slice chocolate cakes, chocolate ice cream, truffles, and chocolate-dipped fruit. You might think that would limit the number of flavors you can choose from, but the ice cream alone comes in varieties such as Brownie Supreme, Really Rocky Road, and Creamy Dreamy Truffle. There are some non-chocolate offerings–you can, for example, order vanilla ice cream–but mostly, you’ll be looking at wall-to-wall chocolate. This café is also home to some of the richest hot chocolate in town.

Dessert Gallery Bakery & Cafe is a great place to go for cute, custom-made baked goods. Their cake flavors include Chocolate Euphoria, a chocolate cake with chocolate chunks,  chocolate ganache, and a chocolate glaze on top. There’s also the Strawberry Dream cake and the Toffee-licious cake if you’re not quite as crazy about chocolate. As for cookies, you’ll find classic flavors like peanut butter, snickerdoodle, and chocolate chunk.  For an extra hit of chocolate, try the dipped version of the chocolate chunk cookie. Also, Dessert Gallery has several standng menu items that are suitable for people with dietary restrictions, such as gluten-free brownies and vegan whoopie pies.

6. House of Pies Restaurant and Bakery

House of Pies Restaurant and Bakery is a late-night diner and bakery rolled into one. A longtime Houston favorite, House of Pies has been around since the 1970s. If you’re someone who is unenthusiastic about cake but loves a good, fruit-filled pie, you should definitely check out their dessert menu. Try the key lime, dutch apple, or French silk pies. They also have specialty pies that they’re known for, including the Bayou Goo pie. This signature pastry has a pecan crust, a sweet cream cheese base layer, and a top layer of vanilla custard with chocolate chunks. House of Pies also has several sugar-free pies for customers with dietary restrictions.

7. Ooh La La

Hank’s Ice Cream has been one of Houston’s top choices for old-fashioned, hand-churned ice cream for over 20 years. Flavor options include butter pecan, cheesecake, and banana pudding. The small, cozy shop offers also offers seasonal flavors, and most of their specialty flavors are chock full of mix-ins. Note: they like to serve pretty big portions here, so one scoop is usually plenty.

Crumbl Cookies isn’t shy about portions, either. The cookies are huge and come in unique and sophisticated flavor combinations. You can choose from the pink velvet cookie, which is a red velvet cake batter flavor topped with cream cheese frosting. You can also try a ruby chocolate chip cookie with the distinctive fruity flavor ruby chocolate is known for. While most cookies are served warm, items like the chocolate strawberry cheesecake cookie are served chilled. The flavors change from one week to the next; each week, you’ll have four or five different flavors to choose from. Crumbl promises that they’ll always offer the milk chocolate chip cookie, however.

10. Crave Cupcakes

If you’re looking for some of the best desserts in Houston, check out Crave Cupcakes. The bakery serves cupcakes from a list of flavors that rotates every day. Your favorite flavor may only show up on certain days of the week, and if you’re worried about missing it, you might want to order ahead. The cupcakes have a chic, minimalist design with a smooth dome of frosting and logo toppers or candy pearls on top. Some standout flavors are the dark chocolate, Italian cream, salted caramel, and the classic chocolate-frosted vanilla. Recently, Crave added vegan and gluten-free options into the standing rotation. You can order cupcakes in the standard, mini, or giant size–that last one can serve up to 10 people.
