There’s never a dull moment in Houston. Here are seven options for free and cheap fun this week (December 30 – January 3) before planning your free and cheap weekend!

Monday (12/30) –  Make plans to attend a free Family Film Festival every day of the school break at Maud Smith Marks Library in Katy. The calendar shares a clue to guess each day’s movie title. Movies are 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm at 1815 Westgreen Blvd in Katy.

Monday (12/30) — Catch a free movie screening of Over the Hedge December 30 – January 2 (Vintage Park) and December 30 – January 1 (Mason Road). It’s all part of the free movies with Alamo Drafthouse Kids Camp. Show times are 10 am. Seats are first come, first served. Buy a $5 food and beverage credit online to guarantee a seat (+ $1.25 ticket fee).

Tuesday (12/31) – Attend a New Year’s Eve Historical Bash at George Ranch Historical Park. Kids can enjoy a historical mask-making and noisemaker craft, learn about “first footing” and crown Baby New Year 2014 (bring your favorite doll). A countdown begins at noon at George Tree House followed by a 12:30 special meal in the George Yard. Park admission is $10 adults and $5 kids. Register for the meal online: $13.50 adults and $10 kids 5-12. Located in Richmond.

Wednesday (1/1) — Take a First Day Hike to kick off 2014. It’s a campaign sponsored by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to start the new year in a state park. Walks range from 1 – 2 miles depending on the location. Find the list of events at the different state parks online. Brazos Bend, Lake Livingston, and Huntsville State Parks are just a few of the ones near Houston.

Thursday (1/2) — Kids age 5-8 can attend a Winter Camp at Katy Prairie Conservancy January 2-3, 9 am to noon. Kids will enjoy crafts, hikes, games and videos as they learn about migration. Fee is $7 for one day or $12 for both days. Online registration is available.

Thursday (1/2) — Thursday is the magic day in the Houston Museum District to visit many museums for free. Six museums are free each Thursday, while a number are free every day.

  • Children’s Museum — free Thursday 5 pm – 8 pm
  • The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston — free Thursday 10 am – 9 pm
  • The Health Museum — free Thursday 2 pm – 5 pm
  • The John C. Freeman Weather Museum — free Thursday 12 pm – 4 pm
  • Buffalo Soldiers National Museum — free Thursday 1 pm – 5 pm

Friday (1/3) — Watch a free outdoor screening of Despicable Me 2 at Discovery Green. Bring blankets or lawn chairs to watch from the White Promenade or The Lake House deck. Movie begins at 6:30 pm. Located at 1500 McKinney.
