Get ready for a weekend of free fun! Here is a snapshot of 18 Free Things to Do in Houston this weekend, August 4-6:

FRIDAY

Catch a Shakespeare play — Houston Shakespeare Festival returns to Miller Outdoor Theatre with two free productions: Twelfth Night and Richard III on alternating nights. Friday is Richard III beginning at 8:15 pm. Free reserved seats are available performance day at Miller Box Office, 10:30 am – 1 pm. Located at Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Dr.

Watch the bats — Watch bats emerge under the Waugh Bridge. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to hear a brief presentation (Bat Chat) on Waugh Bridge Bat Colony. Meet on the platform at Waugh Drive and Allen Parkway. Free public parking at Spotts Park. This is held the first Friday each month.

Enjoy a free Friday flick — Head to The Square at Memorial City for a free outdoor movie screening on Flashback Friday. This month is the 2000s! August 4 features Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban beginning at 8 pm. Located at 303 Memorial City Way.

Learn to salsa dance — Enjoy free salsa dance lessons at Latin Beats Friday night at the Downtown Aquarium. From 7 pm – 11 pm you can learn salsa dancing from professional dance instructors. This is the LAST free Latin Beats of the summer season and it includes a free concert! The Aquarium is located at 410 Bagby at Memorial.

 SATURDAY

Free yoga in the park — The summer series, Savasana into Summer, continues Saturdays at Hermann Park, thanks to Namitzi Yoga. The free weekly Yoga in the Park is open to all skill levels. Meditation is 8:15 am – 8:25 am with yoga from 8:30 am – 9:30 am. This is located on the east side of the Jones Reflection Pond at Hermann Park. No prior experience needed.

WWII hangarSee WWII planes — Tour the WWII Museum and visit the Hangar of the Houston Wing of the Commemorative Air Force 10 am – 3 pm. It’s a great chance to get up close to the Wing’s flyable WWII military aircraft: climb into a cockpit of a WWII trainer or go inside a WWII Paratroop aircraft. Located at West Houston Airport, 2 miles north of I-10 east off Barker Cypress on Groschke Rd.

Craft a necklace — Families will enjoy this month’s Hands-on Houston event Saturday, 11 am – 3 pm, at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. The free craft this month is Pressed Flower necklaces. Kids can arrange pressed flowers and plants with laser-cut wood pieces to assemble a nature inspired necklace. This is a drop-in event that will take about 25 minutes with all materials provided. Located at 4848 Main Street.

Enjoy kid-friendly fun — Bring your family to Back to School Splash Bash Saturday, August 5, at Sugar Land Town Square from 10:30 am – 2:30 pm. The event features free water slides, hula hoop contest, live music and more. Bring a backpack and school supplies to help support the Fort Bend Rainbow Room. Located at 2711 Town Center Blvd.

Watch movies outdoors— 1) Dow Park: Watch a free screening of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them beginning at dusk at Dow Park in Deer Park. 610 E. San Augustine. 2) Movie Night on the Strand in Galveston returns August 5 with The Secret Life of Pets, 7:30 pm. Movie begins at dusk. Grab your chairs, blankets and enjoy a family-friendly movie outdoors! This is held the first Saturday of each month at Saengerfest Park, 2300 Strand.

Mingle at free museums — It’s another weekend for Bank of America’s “Museums on Us” program with free admission to Children’s Museum of Houston, and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This is for Bank of America cardholders only, not their children. It’s held the first full weekend each month.

White Linen NightsCelebrate community in the Heights — The annual White Linen Night in the Heights returns Saturday, 6 pm – 10 pm. Engage in the Heights community through art, entertainment, live music, and more. Streets are closed for crowds to mingle and browse the eclectic shops. Find specials, discounts and entertainment including live music, parking lot parties, food trucks, and more. Located in the 200-300 block of W. 19th St.

Catch a Shakespeare play — Houston Shakespeare Festival presents Shakespeare in the Park at Miller Outdoor Theater. Saturday features the comedy, Twelfth Night. Free reserved seats are available performance day at Miller Box Office, 10:30 am – 1 pm at Miller Outdoor box office in Hermann Park.

SUNDAY

Celebrate George’s birthday — Celebrate George Hermann’s 174th birthday at Hermann Park from 10 am – 2 pm Sunday! Kids will enjoy arts and crafts, carnival games and complimentary face painting. Indulge in a free slice of birthday cake at Pinewood Derby, 11 am – 2 pm, while supplies last. And cheap: Kids 12 and under can ride the Hermann Park Railroad for $1.74! Hot dogs, popcorn, corn dogs and vanilla soft serve cups are just $1.74, too!

Celebrate root beer — Head to Saint Arnold’s to celebrate National Root Beer Float Day! It’s free admission to family-friendly fun in the (Root) Beer Hall Sunday, noon – 5 pm. There is a fee for its amazing root beer float topped with Fat Cat Creamery’s Mexican Vanilla ice cream. Located at 2000 Lyons.

Sunday in Nature — The first and third Sundays are free at Armand Bayou Nature Center, thanks to Dow. This week’s Sunday in Nature theme is alligators. Free admission is offered anytime between noon and 4 pm with the special program from 1-4 pm. Front gates lock at 5pm. This is offered the 1st and 3rd Sunday each month.
