It’s another weekend in Houston with plenty of free fun! Check out these 21 Free Things to Do in Houston December 1-3:

 FRIDAY

Catch the downtown tree lighting — The Mayor’s Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting is Friday, December 1, 6 pm. The 98th annual event features music, fireworks, free Santa photos, and the official lighting of the downtown tree near City Hall. Families are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy to the Reliant booth for those in need. Everyone who brings a toy will receive a light-up Santa hat from Reliant. The event is from 6 pm – 8 pm at 901 Bagby at City Hall.

Play in the snow — It’s the annual tree lighting at Snowfest Festival in Missouri City (5:30 pm – 9 pm), plus snow hill, Santa, moonwalks, fireworks and more. The Snowfest Parade is Saturday. Located in Missouri City, 1522 Texas Parkway, City Hall Complex. Parking is not available onsite but free shuttles are available.

Watch a holiday movie under the moon — Kick off December with a free outdoor screening of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, 7 pm, at The Square at Memorial City. Located at 303 Memorial City Way.

Chill in the winter wonderland — Make holiday crafts, get a free photo with Santa, and enjoy all the free games and activities at Bass Pro Shops’ Santa’s WonderlandThe fun continues seven days a week through Christmas with games such as laser arcade, remote control trucks and activity tables. Craft making is 5 pm – 7 pm weekdays and noon to 5 pm weekends. Free Santa pics are 10 am – 8 pm Saturday and noon – 5 pm Sunday. Two locations at 5000 Katy Mills Circle and 1000 Basspro Drive in Pearland.

SATURDAY

Relax with Tai Chi Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese Martial Art that centers the person body, mind, and spirit. Enjoy a free class each Saturday at 8:30 am at Katy’s Central Green Park. Trina’s class promotes overall health and well-being. Located at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd.

Sit with Santa — There are lots of places offering free photos with Santa Saturday including Bass Pro, Dickinson Festival of Lights, YMCA and Petco.

Celebrate an Old-fashioned ChristmasOld-Fashioned Christmas returns to Katy 10 am – 5 pm in combination with Katy Market Days. It featuresa holiday market, 50,000 pounds of snow, petting zoo and No Label Beer Garden. It also includes a visit with Santa ($5), carolers and food. Located at Avenue B in Katy. 

WWII hangarSee WWII military aircraft — Don’t miss your chance to tour the WWII Museum and visit the Hangar of the Houston Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. It’s a great chance to get up close to the Wing’s five flyable WWII military aircraft: climb into a cockpit of a WWII trainer or go inside a WWII Paratroop aircraft. This is a free event the 1st and 3rd Saturday at the West Houston Airport from 10 am – 3 pm. Located 2 miles north of I-10 east off Barker Cypress on Groschke Rd.

Craft family fun — Make your own eco print using natural materials at the next Hands-On Houston event, Saturday, 11 am – 3 pm at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Discover how to use flowers, roots and leaves from the HCCC Craft Garden. This always-free arts organization offers exhibits and education resources at 4848 Main Street.

Watch The Nutcracker in the Park — Head to Katy’s Central Green Park for its latest Art in the Park. This month features a performance of The Nutcracker by students from Intempo Dance. Located at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd.

Have fun at an art car workshop — What a fun opportunity to meet and chat with Houston art car artists! Join Toyota Dream Car Art Contest and The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art Saturday for a free Art Car Workshop about the craft of creating an art car with kids and students. The event is free but RSVP in link. The event from 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm features discussions about managing an art car build, tips and tricks plus meet local art car artists in the community. Don’t miss the panel discussion to learn even more from art car leaders. Located at 2334 Gulf Terminal Dr.

Mingle at free museums with BofA — Bank of America provides free admission the first weekend of each month for “Museums on Us” program. The Houston locations include Children’s Museum of Houston and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This is for Bank of America and Merrill Lynch cardholders only, not their children.

Support local — Browse DesignCraft Holiday Market at Market Square Park, Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm. The event features handmade design goods from local designers and boutiques plus live music and demonstrations. Market Square Park is located downtown at 301 Milam.

Browse local artists — The First Saturday Arts Market takes place Saturday, 11 am – 5 pm. This monthly outdoor market in the Heights features original art, music, and fun. Located at 540 W. 19th.

View new outdoor art installations — Don’t miss this season’s new outdoor art installation at Discovery Green — Hello, Trees! A Walking Serenade. Created by the Montreal art collective Daily tous les jours, it transforms your voice messages into light and music. It was created specifically for Discovery Green’s alley of trees. Play in the snowGet in the holiday spirit with Winter Fun Sunday, 3 pm – 5 pm at Willow Waterhole Park. Kids will love the 25-ft. snow hill. Located at the South Gazebo, 5300 Dryad.
