FRIDAY

Watch a movie under the moon — 1) Midtown — Catch a free screening of The Sandlot on a giant screen in Midtown’s Bagby Park! Plus don’t miss happy hour food and drink deals from 4 pm until the end of the movie! Located at 415 Gray St. 2) The Square at Memorial City — Enjoy a free outdoor screening of Space Jam at The Square at Memorial City. It’s all part of Flashback Friday with movies from the ’90s each Friday.

Enjoy an outdoor musical — Miller Outdoor Theatre’s annual summer musical continues this weekend featuring Pippin. This is produced by Theater Under the Stars with free shows through Sunday. Free reserved, covered seats are available on performance day, 10:30 am – 1 pm, at the Miller Box Office. Located at 6000 Hermann Park Dr.

Listen to live music on the green — Enjoy a free outdoor concert at 7:45 pm featuring a variety of music by Justin Michael Bell, who already has music on Texas radio. He is currently working with hit songwriters in Nashville and Texas on an upcoming album. This is located at Willow Fork Drainage District’s Central Green Park, 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd. 

Learn to salsa dance — Enjoy free salsa dance lessons at Latin Beats every Friday night at Downtown Aquarium. Learn salsa dancing from professional dance instructors from 7 pm – 11 pm. A live band will play, since it’s the last Friday of the month. The Aquarium is located at 410 Bagby at Memorial.

SATURDAY

Free yoga in the park — The summer series, Savasana into Summer, continues Saturdays at Hermann Park, thanks to Namitzi Yoga. The free weekly yoga class outdoors is open to all skill levels. Meditation is 8:15 am – 8:25 am with yoga from 8:30 am – 9:30 am. This is located on the east side of the Jones Reflection Pond at Hermann Park. No prior experience needed!

Enjoy yoga on the avenueYoga on the Avenue returns to River Oaks’ West Ave shopping center Saturday, 9 am. The bi-monthly outdoor event features a free yoga class on the closed-off street in the middle of the mixed-use development. The 45-minute Vinyasa flow class, taught by Revolution Studio founder and owner Kim Syma, will be accompanied by a live DJ and followed by a block party on the Avenue with free food and prizes. Located at West Avenue River Oaks, 2800 Kirby.

Relax with Tai Chi — Engage in Tai Chi Saturday mornings in Katy at 8:30 am. This slow and gentle exercise — perfect for all levels– is a Chinese exercise system that uses slow body movements to achieve a state of relaxation. Located at Central Green Park, 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd.

Ride the trainFree Public Run Day at Zube Park is Saturday, 9 am – 1 pm, thanks to Houston Area Live Steamers. Families can enjoy riding model trains large enough to ride the 3rd Saturday each month, March – November. Zube Park is located at 17802 Roberts Rd. near Hockley.

Celebrate a birthday — There will be lots of celebrating Saturday at Big Blue Whale’s 3rd Birthday Bash, 10 am – 4 pm. Meet Nosey Rosey and her miniature horse friends! Kids can groom and pet these horses from Paloma Trails and enjoy a storytime. Other activities include hula hoop demo, craft time, giveaways and more. The first 50 folks get free Steel City pops! Located in the Heights at 237 W. 19th St.

Visit WWII Planes & Museum — Tour the WWII Museum and visit the Hangar of Houston Wing of the Commemorative Air Force 10 am – 3 pm. It’s a great chance to get up close to the Wing’s flyable WWII military aircraft: climb into a cockpit of a WWII trainer or go inside a WWII Paratroop aircraft.  The hangar and museum are open the 1st and 3rd Saturday each month. Located at West Houston Airport, 18000 Groschke Rd.

Take a walking tour — Enjoy a free walking tour in Buffalo Bayou Park sponsored by Buffalo Bayou Partnership highlighting the landscape and ecology of 19th century Texas that created Houston. Play at summer camp — Family Summer Camp at Bass Pro Shops continues Saturday with free activities for kids Saturdays and Sundays (& Thursday) plus family workshops and more. Family Summer Camp lasts from noon to 5 pm through July 23. Engage in activities such as casting challenge, BB shooting range, weekly crafts and free workshops. Bass Pro Shops has two Houston-area locations in Katy (5000 Katy Mills Circle) and Pearland (1000 Basspro Drive).

Celebrate the arts Julydoscope returns Saturday at downtown Discovery Green for an evening of music, poetry and film. Hosted by Houston’s own Ernie Manouse, the space-inspired event will kick off at 7 pm with trivia, giveaways, and free poems upon request by the Inprint Poetry Buskers. As the sun sets, sit back and enjoy a live saxophone quartet concert by MUSIQA and a family-friendly compilation of CineSpace short films. Located at Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney.

Enjoy friendly musical competition — Celebrate Sugar Land Super Star Round 2, an American Idol-like competition, where five finalists will be selected to compete in August at finals. Kicks off at 7:30 pm at Sugar Land Town Square. Enjoy additional performances by previous Superstar contestants.

SUNDAY

Take a walk in the woods — Bayou City Outdoors in sponsoring a free public event Sunday morning beginning at 8 am. A Walk in the Woods is all about hiking Memorial Park trails. This hour and a half quick-paced hike will introduce folks to some of the lesser-known (and more adventuresome) trails the park offers.  Wear tennis shoes or hiking boots. Bring water! Meet at Memorial Park, Picnic Lane, by the rugby/soccer field parking lot.

Enjoy nature outdoors — Admission is free at Armand Bayou Nature Center the third Sunday of each month for Sundays in Nature, thanks to Dow Chemical Co. This Sunday visit for free from noon to 4 pm. Hike trails with naturalist interpreter, view live reptiles, relive 1895 cultural history of area. 8500 Bay Area Blvd. in Pasadena.
