Free Houston Weekend Fun November 16-18


Create holiday memories — The Woodlands features two events this Saturday, November 17, to kick off the holiday season. Enjoy the 30th annual Lighting of the Doves Festival from 3 pm – 9 pm along the Woodlands Waterway with live music, ice carvers, snow play area, Santa Claus, and more. At the same time, it’s the iWOW celebration (International Winter on the Waterway) promoting the cultural diversity of The Woodlands with food, entertainment, arts and crafts, and music. Bring an unwrapped toy to iWOW and get free parking in Town Center parking garage.

Watch a movie under the moon — The next IKEA Houston Screen on the Green is Friday, November 16, with the feature flick, Hugo, set in 1930 Paris. Movie begins at 7:30 pm with activities and contest an hour early. Located at Discovery Green downtown, 1500 McKinney.

Light that treeHome for the Holidays in Old Town Spring is celebrating its 32nd year of adding festivities and fun for Houston-area families. The Holiday Tree Lighting celebration is Saturday, November 17, 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm, with music by The Invincible Czars. Home for the Holidays is November 17 – December 23. Old Town Spring is located about 30 minutes north of downtown.

Free Houston Weekend Fun November 16-18Marvel at the chalk artistsVia Colori is in its seventh year as a street festival fundraiser for The Center for Hearing and Speech. This free event November 17-18 features not only more than 200 artists creating street chalk art but also live music, Reverend Butter and his ice carving talent, kids’ craft zones, MINI Cooper  Street Scene Scavenger Hunt and more. Kids can create their own 2ft. square chalk masterpiece for a $10 donation. Free festival hours are 10 am – 6 pm Saturday and 10 am – 5 pm Sunday at Sam Houston Park downtown.

Love outdoor skating — The grand opening of The Ice at Discovery Green kicks off Saturday, November 17, 4 pm – 10 pm with Fire and Ice. The special event features a holiday lighting ceremony, ice carving, Art Cars, Radio Disney performers, professional skaters, and more. Discovery Green is located at 1500 McKinney downtown. Skating is $12 per person, so it’s not free!

Free Houston Weekend Fun November 16-18Celebrate local art — Browse some of Houston’s finest artists at the 7th annual Winter Holiday Art Market, sponsored by Spacetaker. The weekend fun kicks off Saturday with live music, shopping, artists demonstrations, complimentary beverages, and family activities. The festival is located at the Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter Street. Hours are 11 am – 8 pm Saturday and 11 am – 4 pm Sunday. (An exclusive preview party is Friday, November 18, for $10).

Free Houston Weekend Fun November 16-18Chill in the winter wonderland — Make candy cane reindeer, get a free photo with Santa, and enjoy all the free games and activities at Bass Pro Shops’ Santa’s Wonderland. The holiday fun continues seven days a week through Christmas with games such as slot car racing, laser arcade, remote control trucks and activity tables. Wander art warehouses — Houston’s 20th annual Artists Warehouse ArtCrawl hits the Houston Warehouse District this Saturday, November 17, from 10 am – 9 pm. This free event features more than 160 artists in art buildings, working studios, and homes showcasing their talent. Check out the ArtCrawl map online. Participate in the FotoFest ArtCrawl Bike Scramble and tour the different ArtCrawl venues (9:45 am – 4 pm). Ride the whole day or meet up on the route.
