Get ready for a weekend of free fun! Here is a snapshot of 20 Free Things to Do in Houston this weekend, June 9-11:

FRIDAY

Watch theater outdoors — Catch a free performance of Once On This Island presented by TUTS’ Humphreys School. The performance is an original Caribbean adaptation of the popular Hans Christen Andersen fairytale The Little Mermaid. The show begins at 8:15 pm at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Reserved covered seats are available for free on performance day. Visit the Miller Box Office from 10:30 am – 1 pm on day of show.

Watch Matilda in Concert with Houston Symphony — Don’t miss the world premiere of Matilda in Concert with Houston Symphony Friday, 8 pm. It’s a concert and movie in one! Free mezzanine and lawn seats at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Listen to live music — Enjoy live music at Central Green Park featuring Shark Bait playing classic hits from several decades. Music begins at 7 pm. Located at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd.

Free salsa lessons — Engage in free salsa dance lessons each Friday night all summer with DJ music from 7 pm – 11 pm. Hosted by professional dancers of Texas Salsa Congress. Live music the last Friday each month. Located at Downtown Aquarium, 410 Bagby.

Engage in family funKaty Summer Nights kick off June 9 and continues the second Saturday in July and August. The event features a free outdoor movie, Norm of the North, plus free popcorn. The movie begins at 8 pm. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No glass, alcohol or pets allowed at the park. Located at VFW Park, 6202 George Bush Drive.

SATURDAY

Play outdoors — Kids will enjoy K4K Play 60, a free outdoor event at Central Green Park. Sign up begins at 9 am with play from 10 am-11 am. The morning also features a guest speaker, Even George Vourazeris, an actor from the Houston/Katy, Texas area. Located at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd.

Experience kid-friendly learning — Take advantage of a free learning opportunity Saturdays with Girls Inc.’s STEM Saturday, 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm at Discovery Green. This free hands-on education program relating to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is limited to 60 kids, first-come, first-serve. Located at 1500 McKinney.

Audition for Wheel of Fortune — The Wheel of Fortune Wheelmobile visits Memorial City Mall Saturday and Sunday, 1 pm – 5 pm, to find new contestants! Shows are an hour long and include puzzles, prizes and fun beginning at 1 pm, 2:30 pm and 4 pm. Applications will be distributed an hour before each show. Everyone who attends the event can complete an application with participants selected by random draw. No need to get there early for lines! Learn about primitive weapons — Join the experts at Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center as they teach about primitive weapons at Second Saturday Settlers Series, Saturday, 1 pm – 3 pm. Located at 20634 Kenswick in Humble.

Learn about fishing — Take the kids to Gone Fishing, a kids’ fishing event at Bass Pro Shops Saturday and Sunday. It features a catch and release pond, a free photo download taken at the catch and release pond with the “catch” plus free fishing seminars. The pond and photos are noon – 4 pm with the seminars in the afternoon. Locations include Katy and Pearland.

Enjoy a free cultural film festival — The Houston Asian American Pacific Islander Film Festival (HAAPIFest) is an immersive, multi-day celebration of film, music, and art organized by OCA-Greater Houston. There are several movies on Saturday at various venues and times plus the closing Arts Night filled with music, comedy and dance at 6:30 pm. Get your free tickets from Eventbrite.

Create family fun — Don’t miss Second Saturday at The Depot! This free monthly event in Tomball features a free movie on the giant inflatable screen and lots of fun. Enjoy games, crafts, music, concessions, and family fun for all ages. This month The Wild Life will play on the big screen outdoors at dark. The free event begins at 6 pm at the Depot Plaza in Tomball.

Catch a movie under the stars — There are four free outdoor movies Saturday night: 1) Central Green Park is hosting Mrs. Doubtfire at dusk. 2) Sugar Land Town Square is hosting Moana at 8:30 pm. 3) Discovery Green: Enjoy a free outdoor screening of The Secret Life of Pets at Bank of America’s Screen on the Green at Discovery Green. The movie begins at 8:45 pm. 4) Tomball Depot is showing The Wild Life as part of its Second Saturday at the Depot fun..

Enjoy classical music — Head to the final round of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Young Artists Competition Sunday, 2 pm at University of Houston. The free performance at Dudley Recital Hall features solos by Texas Music Festival orchestra musicians as they compete for the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Festival Orchestra. Located at 4800 Calhoun.

Dance to reggae — It’s A Night at the Caribbean as part of Caribbean Heritage Month Sunday, 7 pm – 9 pm! Celebrate with live music, dancing, and other family friendly activities at Central Green Park in Katy. The evening features The Texas Steel Pan Orchestra, reggae music from King Baby, and a performance by the Jamaican Dancers!
