The weekend is almost here! What are your plans? Here is a snapshot of a few free events and activities to enjoy with family and friends:

Houston art car 2013Celebrate the art car — It’s Art Car weekend in Houston! The parade definitely celebrates the quirkiness of our town. Get a sneak peek of some of the entries in this year’s parade at the Art Car Parade Sneak Peek party Thursday, May 9, at Discovery Green, 6:30 pm-9:30 pm. The free family-friendly evening features live music, kids’ activities, and art cars from the parade. Hopefully the rain will stay away for the 26th annual Art Car Parade, May 11, 1 pm, along Allen Parkway with nearly 300 entries. The Starting Line Party begins at 9 am, with the stage and Kid’s Zone kicking off at 11 am. It’s a full day of fun.

Learn why food mattersChipotle Green Film Series continues Friday, May 10, at Discovery Green. This month’s outdoor film features Eating Alabama, a movie sharing a couple’s pursuit to eat locally produced food. Chef demonstrations and activities kick off at 8 pm with the movie beginning at 8:45 pm. Enjoy free tacos from Chipotle and free samples from Saint Arnold and Barefoot Wine. Free performance Madame Butterfly Watch classical ballet — The Houston Ballet celebrates the 90th anniversary of Miller Outdoor Theatre with three free performances May 10-12 of Madame Butterfly. The story follows a Japanese geisha who gives up her faith and family to marry an American naval lieutenant. Free covered reserved seat tickets are available on performance day from 10:30 am – 1 pm at Miller Box Office. Limit of 4 per person. Hillside seating is free as always. Located at 6000 Hermann Park Drive.

Watch a movie under the moon –Catch a free outdoor movie showing of the classic The Little Rascals Saturday, May 11, at Sugar Land Town Square. The free movie begins at 8 pm and is sponsored by First Colony Church of Christ.

LEGO Creation NationCreate the U.S. with LEGO bricks: If you can’t attend Houston LEGO KidsFest next weekend, take advantage of this free LEGO event! The Woodlands Mall is inviting LEGO enthusiasts to participate in Creation Nation, a free three-day LEGO build event May 10-12 at the jcpenney Court. Builders use LEGO bricks to create an individual structure that represents a favorite city or place in the United States. These individual LEGO structures will be placed in a 12 ft. x 15 ft. map of the United States. Individuals can participate until the Creation Nation map outline is filled. Creation Nation hours are 11 am – 7 pm May 10, 10 am – 6 pm May 11, and noon to 6 pm May 12.

pop shop houstonSupport indie artists — Don’t miss Pop Shop Houston, an indie craft fair, art and music festival at Spring Street Studios Saturday and Sunday, May 11-12 — live music, food trucks and more. Kids will enjoy storytime with local authors and hands-on art activities. The first 50 folks May 11 receive a goodie bag with all kinds of surprises such as movie passes, gifts from Etsy.com, and limited edition button set of Smurfette. The Pop Shop is open 11 am – 7 pm both days. Located at 1824 Spring Street.
