Free Weekend Fun in Houston November 9-11Light up the night — The 24th annual Ice Spectacular and tree-lighting at the Galleria ice rink returns Saturday, November 10, at 6 pm. Imagine 450,000 twinkling lights! Don’t miss the skating and musical performances featuring The Voice‘s RaeLynn, of Baytown. Skating Santa will light the tree himself. Throughout the day, families will enjoy face painting, balloon animal stations, free holiday entertainment, kids’ activities and more.

Create art in an urban backyard — Enjoy a kid’s Old-Fashioned Art Fair at Foelber Pottery Gallery & Studio, November 10, from 11 am – 5 pm.  Lots of fun planned in Foelber’s urban backyard including pottery demonstrations, Adobe wall creation, kids’ activities, Raku Kiln firings, music, refreshments, and more. Foelber is located at 706 Richmond.

Enjoy movies under the moon — It’s another free movie at Friday Night Films, held at Whole Foods Market Montrose Friday, November 9. This week’s Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow flick features the 1998 rom-com hit, You’ve Got Mail. Movie begins at twilight. Bring your lawn chairs! The movie is free but concessions are available for purchase.

Free Weekend Fun in Houston November 9-11Watch creativity with cansCanstruction Houston 2012 brings together local architects, engineers, construction firms, and high school students to design and build creative displays using cans. The all-day build event kicks off Saturday, November 10, from 9 am – 6 pm at City Centre, 800 Town & Country Blvd. The creative canned structures will be on display November 10-18. The cans will ultimately be donated to Houston Food Bank.

Celebrate Gene Kelly — The Houston Cinema Arts Festival celebrates Gene Kelly’s 100th birthday with an outdoor screening of An American in Paris, Sunday, November 11, 6:45 pm. The movie event will be located at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Houston Cinema Arts Festival is a 4-day event featuring a collaboration between film and art institutions through film performances, live music, outdoor projections and more. Robert Redford will be accepting an award Friday night and sharing conversations about his work!

Free Weekend Fun in Houston November 9-11Honor a veteran — Celebrate Veteran’s Day in downtown Houston Sunday with an American Heroes Parade at 12:30 pm. Don’t miss the Veteran’s Job Fair, Veteran’s Health Fair as well as a special ceremony with Mayor Parker. The parade begins at Lamar and Bagby and heads north on Smith. Free parking is available from 9 am – 12:30 pm in Theater District Parking, Tranquility Garage, entrances #2 and #5.

 

Free Weekend Fun in Houston November 9-11Learn about the bees: The Green Film series sponsored by Chipotle Mexican Grill continues this Friday, November 9, at Discovery Green. The final feature film in the series is Queen of the Sun, an uplifting story of beekeepers and scientists working to prevent the catastrophic disappearance of bees. The film starts at 7 pm. Come early to learn from beekeeping experts, enjoy crafts, and samples from Saint Arnold Brewing and Barefoot Bubbly. The Green Film series educates and challenges Houstonians to learn where their food comes from and how what we eat affect us and the world. Discovery Green is located at 1500 McKinney.

Love that dog: It’s family-friendly fun at the Houston Humane Society’s Muttcracker Market, Saturday, November 10, 11 am – 2 pm. It’s all part of the shelter’s Second Saturday program with free hot dogs and popcorn, bounce houses, and more. Free rabies vaccine available 9 am – 2 pm (with office visit fee). Houston Humane Society is located at 14700 Almeda.

Free Weekend Fun in Houston November 9-11Create a crafty airplane — The weekly craft at Lakeshore Learning stores features a crafty airplane. Kids will craft this creative airplane craft Saturday from 11 am – 3 pm. Houston locations at 2405 Post Oak Blvd., The Woodlands, and in Friendswood.
