Disney’s Newsies: The Musical is based of the 1992 film Newsies and features music by two-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, lyrics by Tony Award-winning lyricist Jack Feldmen, and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Both the film and musical tell the story of the Newsboys’ Strike of 1889 when a youth-led campaign to seek fair compensation for child newspaper hawkers essentially shut down New York City for several days. The strike was successful and led to these newsboys or ‘newsies’ receiving higher pay for their work.

The 1992 film bombed in its initial theatrical run and received negative reviews but like many flops do, soon attracted a loyal cult following on home video. That newfound popularity led to a 2011 stage musical based on the film which led to a 2012 Broadway run that led to eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, winning Best Choreography and Best Original Score.

That highly-praised musical is now coming to Houston to our own Playhouse 1960 this December. Newsies: The Musical will be performed for the first three Fridays and Saturdays in December at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 9 and Sunday, December 16 at 3:00 p.m.
