Come celebrate the music of piano prodigy Wladziu Valentino Liberace at the Miller Outdoor Theatre on Nov. 8 at 7 pm.
Renowned pianist Dr. Philip Fortenberry will bring his masterful piano playing, exciting storytelling and beautiful music in “The Hands of Liberace.” This show will be so much more than just a piano concert. Fortenberry will share how Liberace influenced his career as a pianist, telling personal stories about his life growing up as a child of four in rural Mississippi and becoming a sought-after piano player on Broadway. There will also likely be a story on how his hands served as the body double for actor Michael Douglas in HBO’s Emmy-winning show “Behind the Candelabra.”
All performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Drive in Houston, are free, but tickets are required to sit in the covered seating area. Free tickets are available — four per person over the age of 16 — between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the box office the day of the performance, Nov. 8. If there are tickets after 1 p.m., the box office will reopen an hour before the 7 p.m. show.
Liberace began playing the piano at the age of four, a result of his father Salvatore “Sam” Liberace taking his children to musical performances and later demanding the highest of standards from them when it came to practice and performances.
But Liberace’s talent was evident early on. By the age of seven, he was memorizing master-level pieces. As he grew older, playing some seedy places, like strip clubs and cabarets, Liberace developed his flair and showmanship, wearing intricate costumes and interacting with members of the audience.
At the Nov. 8 performance, Fortenberry will perform a number of classical selections, including Liberace’s famous arrangements of “Nola” and “Chopsticks.” The Liberace Foundation of the Performing and Creative Arts is also sponsoring multimedia highlights of Liberace’s career as part of the performance.
And Houston-native Kristen Hertzenberg, who performed the lead role of Christine in “Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular,” is also scheduled to perform, along with Houston’s Apollo Chamber Players.
