Preliminary events for the 2020 Tokyo summer games are already underway as the world gets ready for opening ceremonies for the Olympics this Friday. While COVID protocols prohibit fan entry this year, you can stream the Olympics from your couch with Peacock and FuboTV. Watch the world’s greatest athletes battle it out for national supremacy.

This year, there are a number of athletes from Houston participating in the games. Here are some that are likely to leave a mark on this event.

A global gymnastics superstar, Simone Biles is the five-time 2016 Olympic medalist. She’s favored to win gold across the board and break the U.S. record for most career gold medals (eight) won by a woman in any sport. Simone’s hometown is Spring, Texas.

Cat Osterman, Women’s Softball

A softball legend, Houston native Cat Osterman returns to the Olympics for the third time. Softball was recently reinstated as an olympic sport and the US team is ready to make a run at its 4th gold medal. Team USA is a big favorite to get it done this year.

Houston native Ginny Fuchs is a participant in the women’s flyweight division boxing tournament. The LSU grad worked toward this goal the minute she saw that women’s boxing was returning to the Olympics in 2010. Fuchs has some stiff competition, with Turkey’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu a sizable favorite to take home the gold.

Lawson Craddock, Men’s Road Cycling

An amazing comeback story, Lawson Craddock enters the summer games after breaking his scapula on day one of the 2018 Tour De France. Even more incredible, he finished that race and raised $200,000 in relief for the damage Hurricane Harvey imparted on his native Houston. Medaling in road cycling is extremely challenging with over 100 riders competing for their countries. This year’s favorite is Sloveneian cyclist, Tadej Pogacar.

Courtney and Kelley Hurley, Women’s Fencing

Born in Houston and raised in San Antonio, the Hurley sisters are representing the United States in fencing this year. The Notre Dame grads come from a fencing family and Kelley will represent the US for the 4th time this year. The French and Italians tend to dominate the sport of fencing and it will be interesting to see if any Americans can rise up and snatch a medal.
