What is Cinco De Mayo and why is it celebrated?

According to Wikipedia – Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration held on May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.

What are the activities associated with Cinco De Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in Mexico mainly in the state of Puebla, where Zaragoza’s unlikely victory occurred, though it is also celebrated in other parts of the world. Military parades, reenactments of the Battle of Puebla, and other festive activities are among the traditions. Celebrations include Parades, food, music, folkloric dancing, battle reenactments

When did Cinco De Mayo celebrations originate in the United States?

According to a paper published by the UCLA Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture, the modern American emphasis on Cinco de Mayo began in California in 1863 in reaction to opposition to French rule in Mexico. (#31) “Mexican miners were so overjoyed in the gold country town of Columbia (now Columbia State Park) that they spontaneously fired off rifle shots and fireworks, sang patriotic songs and made impromptu speeches”

In the 1950s and 1960s, the holiday spread across the United States, but it was not mainstream until the 1980s, when marketers, especially beer companies, capitalized on the day’s celebratory nature and began to promote it. It grew in popularity and developed into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, first in places where there were a significant number of Mexican-Americans, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, New York.
