Houston Restaurant Weeks returns for 2020 starting August 1 through September 7 as the single largest fundraiser for Houston Food Bank.
This popular annual event offers Houstonians a great opportunity to try some of the city’s most acclaimed restaurants at a more affordable price with the Houston Food Bank receiving a portion of proceeds of every meal purchased during the event. More than $16.6 million has been raised for the Houston Food Bank through this event over the years, enabling the distribution of more than 44 million meals for those in need.
This year, 250+ restaurants have signed on to participate from all across the Houston area, including a diverse group of eateries from fine dining to casual and everything in between. Many restaurants will be offering their special multi-course, discounted menus for takeout and delivery, as well as for dine-in as usual. In general, diners can expect 2-3 course lunches for $20, 2-3 course brunch for $22, and 3-4 course dinner for $35-$45.
You can browse the menus of the participating restaurants on the HRW website. There are many exciting restaurants on this year’s list, including newcomers and established favorites offering exciting new menus.
One restaurant that really stands out this year is Peli Peli South African Kitchen, a Houston staple that has reinvented itself during these difficult times. For years, Peli Peli has gained acclaim for its legendary South African cuisine, highlighted by steak, chicken, and seafood. But the restaurant was always a “special occasion” type establishment for diners due to its price point.
However, during this pandemic, Peli Peli has taken the opportunity to pivot their menu a bit to make it more affordable while still delivering the amazing flavors they’ve become known for over the years. Now, it’s a restaurant diners can enjoy on a frequent basis without breaking the bank, and that’s especially true during Houston Restaurant Weeks.
This year, Peli Peli’s HRW menu includes a $35 Dinner Menu (usually $45 in years past), a $20 Lunch Menu (also available for dinner as well!), and perhaps most notably, a $13 Kids Menu. Peli Peli is the first restaurant in Houston to offer a kid-specific Houston Restaurant Weeks menu, making it a great choice for families looking to enjoy this event. The HRW menus will be available at both their Galleria and Woodlands locations throughout the event.
Houston Restaurant Weeks Faces New Challenges in 2020
Of course, this year’s HRW will be a bit different than in years past for a couple of reasons.
Earlier this year, Cleverly Stone, the founder of Houston Restaurant Weeks, passed away following a battle with cancer. Stone’s wish was that the annual charitable event continue on for years to come.
Of course, the coronavirus pandemic will also impact HRW this year. Restaurants have very limited capacity for seating diners at the moment, and most people are sticking to curbside and delivery service at the moment.
In short, it’s a tough time for the food industry as well as for those in need, which makes Houston Restaurant Weeks more important than ever in 2020.
The theme of this year’s event is “Dine Out and Do Good.” One dollar per meal purchased will go to the Houston Food Bank, a smaller amount than in years past, but this allows restaurants who have been hit hard during this pandemic to support their workers and keep their doors open during these incredibly difficult times.
