rockets thanksgiving food drive

Looking to help Houstonians in need, the Houston Rockets, Second Servings of Houston, and Kroger are teaming up to host a special food giveaway a week before Thanksgiving.

On Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Toyota Center, the NBA team and nonprofit organization is hosting “Thanksgiving’s On Us.” The contactless drive-thru distribution is providing perishable and non-perishable Thanksgiving food items to those in need.

The event is completely free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to noon across the street from Toyota Center at the LAZ Parking Lot, 1317 Austin St.

There are 2,000 family-sized dinner boxes up for grabs, which is the equivalent of 16,000 chef-prepared meals. The meals are prepared by Hess Corporation’s Food Services Team.

“Volunteers from the Houston Rockets and Second Servings will distribute 2,000 family-sized dinner boxes (equivalent to 16,000 chef-prepared meals), prepared by Hess Corporation’s Food Services Team, along with seasonal produce from Brothers Produce, Ashcraft Bakery dinner rolls, assorted Thanksgiving food items, Southern Ice Cream cones, Frito-Lay chips, hand sanitizer and KN95 masks,” the team said in a released statement.

The food giveaway is geared toward families in need, but there are no income requirements.

“We know Thanksgiving will look different for so many Houstonians this holiday season,” Rockets Community Relations Director Sarah Joseph said in a statement. “Partnering with Second Servings and Kroger gives us the opportunity to provide a holiday meal to those that otherwise might not have received one during this tough year.”

President of Houston Krogers, Joe Kelley said, “Our goal is to end hunger in our communities and to help families in need through this holiday season and we’re happy to share that mission with Second Servings.”

If you’re interested in donating to help Houstonians in need this Thanksgiving, you can text SERVINGS to 50155. All donations will go toward Second Servings’ mission to fight hunger and reduce food waste in Houston.
