Since 1989, the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships have been the final stop for countless collegiate stars before advancing to the professional ranks. Hall of Fame players and perennial all-stars have participated in the event, including Gary Payton, Steve Nash, Jason Terry, Bobby Hurley, Michael Finley, Allan Houston, Wesley Matthews, Cappie Pondexter, Katie Gearlds, Kristi Toliver, Tiffany Hayes, and Ariel Atkins.

As for the High School Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships, it has provided a national platform for the next wave of college standouts to shine in front of a national audience. For more than a decade, the event can claim many of the game’s most recognizable faces as alums, including Trae Young, Collin Sexton, Donovan Mitchell, Buddy Hield, Lauren Cox, Jordin Canada, Chennedy Carter, and Lexie Hull.

Locally, three rising stars with the Houston Rockets are connected to the High School Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships. Jabari Smith, the No. 3 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, was part of the High School Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships in 2021, Jalen Green committed to the 2020 event prior to its cancelation and Kevin Porter Jr. participated in the dunk contest in 2018.

This year, the Houston high school basketball scene will have one of its best represented at the High School Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships as Houston Christian’s Loghan Johnson will take part in the Girls 3-Point Championship on March 31. Johnson, who will play at Texas Tech next season, scored more than 2,000 points in her high school career and guided her team to a combined 61-4 record and back-to-back SPC 4A Championships in her junior and senior seasons.

Both High School & College all-star events will have five separate competitions: Applebee’s Team Shootout, TaxAct Men’s 3-Point Championship, Women’s 3-Point Championship, Battle of the 3-Point Champions, and King’s Hawaiian Slam Dunk Championship.

Additional player participant updates will be announced in the coming weeks, and fans are encouraged to follow the events on social media (Twitter at @CollegeSlam and @HighSchoolSlam and on Instagram at @College_Slam and @HighSchoolSlam) for the latest player participant updates.

“The evolution of these events has inspired us to create what we believe will be the most engaging experience for our participants and fans that we have ever staged,” said Mark Starsiak, vice president of basketball at Intersport, which hosts the events. “These showcase events are synonymous with the most exciting weekend in college basketball and we’re eager to put together an engaging schedule of events at the Bayou Music Center that will serve as a home away from home for basketball fans.”
