THE IMAGES coming from Haiti are chilling. It’s hard to wrap out heads around the vast amount of devastation and life loss that this area is experiencing. Feeling like you can’t make a difference? We can.
In conjunction with Crystal at MoneySavingMom, I am taking her challenge to join together as bloggers to make a difference. As a result — after talking with my husband– I am happy to donate $1 for every comment and tweet Houston on the Cheap readers make on this post (up to $500) to Compassion International. My family sponsors a child each month through Compassion, and this organization serves 64,000 children in Haiti. Compassion will use the money to immediately provide assistance to the families and children it supports there. If you tweet or post to your Facebook, just come back to leave a comment here. Share how you might be helping the helpless in Haiti.
Hundreds of other bloggers are joining together in this effort (check out the list here) to provide help for Haiti. We can make a difference, and I’m thrilled Houston on the Cheap readers can partner together on this mission. I’ve removed my original time frame for this project — but let’s get the word out quickly. A reader named Kim mentioned a great idea in a comment below: Are there any corporate sponsors who might want to step up to match the funds? That would be awesome! Thanks for the great idea!

Thank you for donating, and especially thank you for donating the full amount, even when you didn’t get the entire numbers of comments. 🙂
More power.
Thank you for what you are doing; I know that you are blessing those that are suffering the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. Being inspired by you and all of the other Help for Haiti bloggers, I am giving $100 to Doctors without Borders, which the kind folks at :https://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/index.php are matching. Matching donations really helps, and consequently, I wrote my last post about where people can find people who are willing to match their donations (its being done by people other than just employers), donate to auctions, volunteer, donate airline miles and cell phones and gadgets, attend benefits, and more. So even if you can’t give very much there are ways to stretch that amount. And that is what I am trying to do. My next post will contain updates and even more places that let people get involved; and I hope to start my own donation for a link/comment challenge; but it will take a couple days for me to finish this post. https://thescholarshipblog.blogspot.com/
Again, thank you.
Thank you!
Awesome!
I’m praying for all those people who already have so little and now have to deal with not one but two major quakes.
Thank you for donating. Everyone who can or cannot donate, please pray for the people of Haiti and all relief workers.
I’m praying for the people of Haiti and praying for great organizations like Compassion who are helping.
I think it’s great that you are doing this!
How courageoous!
Sounds great!
God Bless!!
Thank you for your help and concern! May God bless you!
cha-ching.
Thanks!
I think this is great, and I appreciate what you’re doing. I think it’s sad that some people have to find some way to criticize you in the midst of you trying to do a good deed. What you’re doing to help with Haiti is appreciated, and I also appreciate Houston on the Cheap… one of my favorite sites to learn about Houston events and deals.
Hello,
I find it a little off-putting that your donation of $500 is contingent on personal gain (blog traffic/comments). If you can afford to donate $500 (or $100 or $250 etc), why not donate it now? I’m sure your heart is in the right place, and you view your strategy simply as a serendipitous “win-win,” but using this tragedy as a marketing tool seems disingenuous.
Best,
Amanda
I wish there was more to do, but this is definitely a great start.
one buck for me!

Great idea, also one other way people can contribute easily is to send a text message from their cell phone to 90999 and put Haiti in the message. This will charge $10 to your cellular bill which will go to the Red Cross International Relief fund for Haiti, LETS GET TEXTING AND HELP THEM OUT!

If you rely on watching the news for your world view..you can become convinced that there is more bad than good on this planet…but if you become involved and communicate with your fellow man,you begin to realize that there are tons of good, honest and caring people. This website is one good example.
Let’s do this!

Good for you. You’re gonna get some major points from God. I remember how hard it was for us after Ike hit, but at least we still had food and water and a mattress to lay down our head at night. These people have nothing.

Run, Vicki, Run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just saw on Fox news that they just rescued an American from the hotel rubble, I believe he his with Compassion International, but in critical condition of course.
My girls and I went to a Randall’s that is closing and bought some first aid supplies to take to Kingsland Baptist by 5:00pm this afternoon. They are sending a first aid team this weekend.
Oh, and one more comment, I love that my husband’s employer matched our donation, thanks Chase!
Wonderful! thank you!
Thanks, Vicki, a friend from Katy is desperately trying to get into Haiti, her mother was killed there when her home collapsed on her. They flew to Miami, and the latest I heard yesterday was that they were stuck there at the airport. Her father survived. Her mother had been here visiting since June and just returned home on Jan. 6.
My 6 year old son asked me this morning what we could do to help those people – we need to let our children get involed as well.
Thank you Vicki and Rob
