If you plan to go outside in Harris County, you might want to make sure you’re prepared with a mask. Judge Lina Hidalgo and Mayor Sylvester Turner are expected to announce today that all residents must wear masks when in public.

The order would require all residents age 10 and older to cover their face, which includes mouth and nose, when outside of the home. Masks may include scarves, bandanas, handkerchiefs, or other homemade coverings. Medical-grade masks are only recommended for first responders and healthcare professionals.

Exceptions to the rule will include eating, drinking, and exercising.

The announcement is set to come at a briefing at 3 pm today, and follows similar announcements in Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin. No word at this time if Harris County or the City of Houston will issue fines for non-compliance.

The order is expected to take effect this coming Monday and last for 30 days.
