There are a lot of things you can realistically cut from your budget when trying to live on the cheap, but sometimes small splurges are necessary. It’s much easier to stick to a budget or a spending plan when you build in room for small treats now and then, and luckily, McDonald’s has just made those treats a lot more affordable. Between now and the end of 2018, McDonald’s is giving away its signature French fries for free.

McDonald’s free French fries offer was launched in honor of National French Fry Day which was celebrated on July 13. The French fry might have been invented in France (although Belgium disputes that claim), but the United States has fully adopted the fried potato dish as one of its unofficial national foods. The average American eats a whopping 30 pounds of French fries each year. McDonald’s is one of the world’s largest distributors of French fries, selling nearly 9 million pounds of the salty, golden-brown creations each day. It’s no wonder they can give them away for free. Is this too good to be true?

In some ways, yes. The free fries come with a few small hitches: the free French fries are only free on Fridays (or is it Fry-days?), require a purchase of just $1 or more, and can only be claimed through a special coupon distributed through McDonald’s official mobile app. No need to worry, though: the McDonald’s app is free.

Aside from letting you get your hands (and teeth) on free French fries for the rest of the year, the McDonald’s app is a great way to save time and money if you’re a frequent McD’s shopper. The app lets you place orders directly from your phone, allowing you to skip waiting in line and just walk right in to pick up your order.
