This is the ninth year Houston is holding auditions as part of the Metropolitan Opera’s Gulf Coast Region. This prestigious competition is taking place at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, on a campus as beautiful as the loveliest of arias. Auditions begin at 10 a.m. and will conclude around 4 p.m. Once the competition ends, participants and members of the audience are invited to attend a reception announcing the winners.
The strongest vocalists are competing for $7,500 in cash prizes, as well as the opportunity to perform on the Metropolitan Opera stage in New York City. Houston’s winners will move on to the Regional Auditions in New Orleans on Sunday, January 5, 2020. From there, a smaller, elite group will advance to the Grand Finals on Sunday, March 1, 2020 in New York.
Houston competitors will be reviewed by an esteemed panel of judges, including: Gayletha Nichols, former Houston Grand Opera Studio Director and current Director, Apprentice Program for Singers for the Santa Fe Opera; Daren Keith Woods, tenor and Artistic Director of the Seagle Music Colony in upstate New York; and Christopher Cano, Head of Music and Director of the Mario Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio.
Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music is located at 6100 Main Street, Houston, TX 77005.
