miller outdoor theatre virtual series

Miller Outdoor Theatre is easily one of the most treasured public spaces of the Houston area. This cultural landmark is a community staple, providing exceptional live outdoor performances since 1923.

Most notably, the Miller Outdoor Theatre stands out from the crowd due to their “always free” mission. It’s the largest program of this kind in the U.S., attracting Houston locals and tourists alike year after year. By maintaining this philosophy, the Miller Outdoor Theatre reinforces the importance of free, public celebration of arts and culture.

Prior to March 2020, the beloved outdoor venue was in full preparation mode to deliver a showstopping season. Unfortunately, due to the devastating effects of COVID-19, the entire 2020 season had to be canceled. This kind of extended hiatus is unprecedented in the theatre’s history; it has caused a year-long closure, the first in Miller Outdoor Theatre’s nearly 100 years of operation.

But not all is lost. The theater at Hermann Park will be hosting a weekend full of exclusive virtual events streaming live to fans across the area. Some of the events will even take place at Miller Outdoor Theatre just without an audience in attendance.

“Since you can’t come here to our wonderful Hill for your Miller magic fix, we’re going to bring it straight into your home!,” a statement from Miller Outdoor Theatre reads.

The shows take place from October 23-25, and include a jazz festival, soul music, and more. You can learn more about the full lineup of live weekend events below:

Friday, October 23, 7:30 pm: In the Studio with Zeshan B

On October 23rd, the theatre invites viewers into the home studio of Zeshan B. for a live musical performance and intimate discussion. The artist is known for his Indo-Pakistani Soul influences, as well as his strong message of change.

“A virtuoso vocalist, Zeshan, is widely recognized as one of the most unique singers to come out of Chicago. Blending the hard-driving rhythms and horn-heavy sounds of the 60’s and 70’s soul with the angsty scats and vocal styling of early IndoPakistani film and folk music, he has created an entirely new genre that is his very own,” a press release from Miller Outdoor Theatre states.

In addition to a live performance, Zeshan will also have a conversation with Houston music icon Kam Franklin, lead singer of The Suffers.

Saturday, October 24, 7:30 pm: Aperio Presents Music By Copland, Piazzolla, D’Rivera, & Bragato

Saturday evening will present a magical sampling of music by American contemporary composers live from Miller Outdoor Theatre without an audience. The show will be livestreamed from behind the curtain of Miller Outdoor Theatre, and this important work will be executed by Aperio, a Houston-based ensemble.

You’ll be able to stream the show live on Facebook, YouTube, and MillerOutdoorTheatre.com.

Sunday, October 25, 6 pm: Houston Jazz Festival

Shifting gears yet again, October 25th’s event is all about the celebration of Jazz. In honor of Art Blakely’s 101st birthday, Bu’s Jazz Messengers will be headlining the event, carrying out stunning performances in the celebration of this Jazz legend. The show starts at 6 pm Sunday evening with a performance by The Houston Jazz Collective.

You can visit MillerOutdoorTheatre.com to live stream the show, or you can watch it live on YouTube here or catch it live on Facebook here
