Mardi Gras in Galveston – Menardi Gras History
On March 26, 1856, the first Mardi Gras ball in Galveston was held at Michel Menard’s mansion. “The party started early and ended late,” according to the Galveston County Daily News.
Galveston’s first formal Mardi Gras celebration was in 1871. In that year, the Momus and Myth krewes fought for dominance. By 1873, people were flocking to Galveston for Mardi Gras. The party went on until Galveston had to split the spotlight with New Orleans. Galveston’s Mardi Gras died during WWII. A lack of men, stuff, and money made the celebrations inappropriate. Post-war celebrations returned, albeit smaller and private.
It was 1985 when Galvestonian George P. Mitchell and his wife Cynthia revived Mardi Gras! The Mitchell’s Tremont House hotel in the Historic Strand District provided a beautiful setting. A mile-long Grand Night Parade, a gala ball, live entertainment, and the first Galveston Art Walk were among the festivities!!!
Menardi Gras 2022 – What To Expect
What: Revelers will enjoy photo ops with a special photo mirror, dancing on two dance floors, an official Mardi Gras float courtesy of the island’s Krewe of Saints, and all the beads and party favors that go along with the annual celebration.
Attire: Mardi Gras (and Menardi Gras) is all about dressing for a great time. We recommend something festive (costumes are always welcomed) and fun. The event will be held outside so please keep that in mind when deciding. There will be heaters installed under the tent.
Food: Muffuletta kabobs, vegetarian red beans and rice, Cajun sausage stuffed mushrooms, shrimp étouffée over rice, and Cajun pulled pork sliders will be served during this year’s Menardi Gras.
Drinks: The popular Mardi Gras Hurricane Punch will be available along with craft beer provided by Houston’s Eureka Heights Brewery. Of course the French 75s, a Menardi Gras tradition in and of itself, will be on hand as well!!!
Music: The N.O. Hustlers Brass Band will provide the music for Menardi Gras. The Hustlers Brass Band is the best party band in New Orleans. They’ve been kicking it hard with a flavor straight from the streets of New Orleans since 2005, paying homage to the city’s unique musical traditions. However, due to the group’s youth, their music encompasses a diverse range of musical styles, including R&B, Funk, Gospel Traditional Jazz, Zydeco, Latin, and Be-Bop. They’ll take visitors on a tour through the history of the Crescent City brass band tradition. Some of New Orleans’ best musicians make up the ensemble.
