At this new exhibit in Houston launching in October, explore the solar system using interactive technology and inspire the young ones in the family to take an interest in all things moon, Mars, asteroids and beyond. The exhibit is a tour of how an astronaut prepares for a space mission, drives a rover and uses a robotic arm in space. Using simulations you can also launch a rocket, pilot a spaceship and dabble in hands-on technology that is actually put into practice in outer space, right in the museum! Asia Society Texas: Ali Velshi on the Pandemic and Global Economic Recovery

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston: Afro-Atlantic Histories

There are a number of new exhibits coming up in October at the museum and one among them is a tour of the history and legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. The exhibit dynamically juxtaposes works by artists from 24 countries to bring forth varied perspectives across time and geography that unfold through six thematic sections and narrate the stories of this diaspora. On display are as many as 130 works of art and documents made in Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe through 500 years, from the 17th century to the 21st century. If you are a history buff or simply someone curious about the African-American diaspora, this exhibit is a must attend.

Towards the end of the month, the museum is coming up with another exhibit, this one featuring paintings, sculptures, mobiles and works on paper spanning the careers of two prolific artists, Pablo Picasso and Alexander Calder. The internationally traveling exhibition reveals the radical innovation and enduring influence of the work of these two exemplary 20th century artists on the evolution of modern art. Conceived by the grandsons of the two artists, the exhibition’s focus is on  Calder’s and Picasso’s exploration of the void, or absence of space to arrive at the essence of their subject.

Holocaust Museum Houston: 2022 Texas Poet Laureate Lupe Mendez

As part of the Latinx Heritage Month, the museum will be hosting poet, writer, educator and activist Lupe Mendez for a session during which he will recite some of his most prolific works. Lupe’s poems are reflective of his Texan roots as well as his roots in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Being the son of an undocumented Mexicano (who later became documented) and a Southern Tejana, his poems explore the emotional turmoil and identity constructs of growing up in such a sphere in a way which connects with a novice reader to the pro poetic writer.

The Menil Collection: Wall Drawing Series: Marcia Kure

A new exhibit coming up in October at the Menil Collection will showcase the work of artist Marcia Kure who has been commissioned to create a third of an ongoing series of ephemeral wall drawings in the entry space of the Menil Drawing Institute. Her works explore concepts like colonial legacies and diasporic identities through compositions that feature the curvilinear Uli line, a traditional Nigerian design motif as well as plant-based pigments extracted from kola nuts, indigo, coffee, and charcoal. For connoisseurs of art, this exhibition is a can’t miss. Be sure to also check out a talk by Kure scheduled on the day of the exhibit’s launch.

The Health Museum: Conversations with Liver Experts: Fatty Liver Disease and its Progression
