“Party, with a purpose” is one way to describe the mission statement of one of Central America’s exciting new talents. On Friday, November 12th at 7 PM, Miller Outdoor Theatre celebrates the season finale with a free Doctor Nativo concert. The show touches on the artist’s Mayan identity and will leave you and your family empowered and inspired.
Doctor Nativo & His Music
Hailing from Guatemala, Doctor Nativo’s music features reggae, cumbia, hip hop, and pre-Columbian instruments. An activist and artist, Doctor Nativo (known off-stage as Juan Martinez) grew up during the tumultuous cold-war era in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.
After leaving school and setting his sights on traveling the world, Doctor Nativo set up in Barcelona to play his music for all to hear. It wasn’t until years later when he returned to Guatemala and attended his first Mayan ceremony, that he got in touch with his spiritual side, which had a profound impact on his music.
Interested in hearing some of his music before the show? Check out his popular song, “Guatemaya” which features the sound of marimba, infused with Mayan culture. Guatemaya, a play on the country’s name, marks the first direct release to the U.S. market for Doctor Nativo.
