First Bat Fest at Houston Arboretum | Group with bat detectors
The Houston Arboretum will have its first-ever “Bat Fest” on September 17, Saturday, from 10 am to 2 pm! This fun educational event is made available to encourage parents to bring their kids out to enjoy themselves and learn about the benefits these superhero bats that hunt mosquitoes, control pests, pollinate flowers, and disseminate seeds give us humans.
First-Ever Bat Fest at the Houston Arboretum – More details
Visit the “Bat Fest” booths of neighborhood organizations like the Houston Bat Team and Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Coalition to learn more about the 11 different species of bats found in Houston, how they benefit people, and how we can help them. There will be entertaining bat-themed activities available, such as kid-friendly crafts and live animals, as well as a blood drive with Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center.
“We are excited about this new, first-time event all about bats, which features entertainment and education for both children and adults,” says Debbie Markey, Executive Director of the Houston Arboretum. “Bats are fascinating to people of all ages, and we will help them better understand all the good things that bats do for us every day. ‘Bat Fest’ is a perfect way to enlighten while offering fun activities, thanks to the help of our partners.”
“Going Batty”: An Adult-Only event happening at the Bat Fest
Adults can continue their celebration of “Bat Fest” at “Going Batty,” a nighttime event that runs from 6:30 to 8:30 PM since bats are the pollinators of the tequila agave in the Arboretum, which also features tequila goodies including Tequila Popsicles! Instructor Cullen Geiselman, Ph.D., a bat expert, will speak to the audience and go through the significance of bats in our environment as pollinators, seed dispersers, and pest controllers.
Bat-trekking at the Arboretum Grounds
Another event element is a bat trek utilizing specialized detectors to listen to bat sonar across the Arboretum grounds.
