Basement to Attic Tours of the 1892 Bishop’s Palace
What: The 1892 Bishop’s Palace Basement to Attic Tours includes Mrs. Gresham’s studio, giving visitors a unique glimpse into areas of the National Historic Landmark that are often off-limits. Passport to Freedom Project
What: To inform the public about the appeal and background of the Freedom Quilts, Nia Cultural Center will organize a “Passport to Freedom” event. According to folklore, a quilt hung from a windowsill or clothesline would frequently signify a safe location along the Underground Railroad. These quilts had some sort of code stitched into them. People were guided to safety or warned of danger by the forms and patterns embroidered into the design. In this event, kids are given a paper passport, and they must visit the quilt stations to obtain a stamp and a gift. Each stop provides details on the history, symbolism, and other aspects of the Underground Railroad’s freedom quilts.
