And be sure to capture the perfect photo opportunity with your loved ones, “popping” from the colossal 7-foot “art” cake, majestically nestled amidst the lush greenery of Miller Plaza. It’s a deliciously fun way to savor the magic of the evening! Sign a giant birthday card and see “Life is a Dance,” a mural created by Mark DeLeon which will be on display.
And when the sun sets, get ready for a performance that will take your breath away as guests will be treated to an unforgettable performance of “Jewels” by The Houston Ballet.
Happy Birthday Miller Outdoor Theatre! – The Houston Ballet Performs Jewels
The Houston Ballet is one of the world’s most renowned ballet companies, and their performance of George Balanchine’s “Jewels” is a true masterpiece, with each act serving as an embodiment of their namesake jewel through the unique musical stylings of their corresponding composer. Last performed by Houston Ballet in February 2022, James Nelson, Executive Director of Houston Ballet said, “Jewels is one of George Balanchine’s master works. It’s a balance of opulence and glamour and technically challenging dancing and a fitting ballet to celebrate Miller’s centennial celebration.”
Balanchine’s Emeralds is set to the mellifluous tunes of Gabriel Fauré. The witty and lively Rubies is a testament to Balanchine’s collaboration with Igor Stravinsky. And finally, his illustrious Diamonds, accompanied by the resplendent melodies of Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky, is a stunning display of classic ballet dancing at its best.
The Houston Ballet dancers’ artistry, elegance, and technical mastery will transport you on a journey you won’t soon forget. The Houston Ballet, which opened its doors in 1955, is dedicated to kindling a passion for dance through artistic excellence, electrifying performances, and cutting-edge choreography.

Miller Outdoor Theatre – 1923 to 2023
Back in May 12, 1923, Miller Outdoor Theatre was dedicated “To the Arts of Music, Poetry, Drama and Oratory”. Its first performance, “Springtime of Our Nation,” was a grand pageant featuring a whopping 2,500 performers. Today, the theatre boasts an impressive eight months of programming with 130 diverse performances that cater to both Houston locals and visitors.
As Miller Outdoor Theatre celebrates its 100th anniversary, Managing Director Cissy Segall Davis reflected on the long journey the venue has taken. While the theatre remains free for the public to enjoy, Davis stressed that maintaining this cultural gem requires more than just love. The Miller Theatre Advisory Board has launched a capital campaign to raise $12.5 million dollars for renovations and improvements to enhance the visitor experience.
Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help achieve the masterplan for Miller Outdoor Theatre. As part of the #celebratemiller100 campaign, you can make a $100 contribution to support this historic venue and its future generations of visitors.
