Spring Break starts in less than a week for school-age kids. Houston venues offer a number of special events and activities over spring break each year.
Here are some of the spring break highlights this year, March 12-16.
Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo — Value Wednesday is the day to save money on Houston Rodeo fun! Select seats are just $10 to the rodeo and concert with The Band Perry performing Wednesday, March 14. Check out the livestock show, AGventure, carnival and shopping at Reliant Park for just $5 for adults. Kids and seniors are free! Don’t miss the $1 games and $1 food bites from 11 am – 4 pm in Kids’ Country Carnival. Purchase tickets online.
Studio Movie Grill — Families can enjoy a kid-friendly matinee for only $2 per ticket March 10-18 at 11 am (plus every March weekend). This month’s Kidtoons feature is The Gruffalo and The Wiggles, rated G. Kidtoons matinee will be shown at both Houston SMG locations: CityCentre, 805 Town & Country, and Copperfield, 8580 Hwy. 6 North at West Road.
IKEA Houston — The Swedish retailer has planned plenty of Kul (that’s Swedish for fun) for folks in Houston this spring break. Special spring break events include Laughter Yoga, make-up consultants and skin care tips, creative music workshop, and Mad Science of Houston demonstrations March 16 at noon, 2 pm and 4 pm. IKEA partners with the Aurora Picture Show March 17 for a Green Screen workshop for kids, noon to 3 pm. How cool!
Discovery Green — Spring activities at Houston’s downtown park Discovery Green kick off for spring break with a free screening of Puss in Boots. It’s all part of H-E-B Family Movie Night, Friday, March 9, 7:30 pm, on the big outdoor screen. March 10 features IKEA Houston Screen on the Green with an outdoor screening of Spiderman 2 at 7:30 pm. Spring Break Art Week (March 12-16) features free daily performances by Houston arts groups including Opera to Go, Houston Ballet, HGO’s Storybook Opera, Red Door Productions, and Dance Source Houston. Sundance Cinemas— Watch a free screening of Annie: The Movie to help kick off TUTS’ upcoming musical at the Hobby Center March 20 – April 1. The free movie is Monday, March 12, 7 pm, at Sundance Cinemas, 510 Texas downtown.
The Children’s Museum of Houston — Tons of daily fun all week as the museum celebrates Destination Celebration 2012. It’s dubbed the “ultimate family destination” with hands-on activities, bungee trampoline, Party Rock, and daily entertainment such as Frisbee dogs, magician, juggling, ComedySportz, Glee songs from TUTS, steel drums, and more. Don’t miss March 14 (3/14) celebrating Pi Day and the huge Pi fight at 1:59 pm. Check out the daily schedule online. Go free on Thursday for Free Family Night from 5 pm – 8 pm. Admission is $9 per person with hours 10 am – 6 pm. Located at 1500 Binz.
Space Center Houston — H.O.T (Half-Off Tickets) are back just in time for spring break. Get half-price admission to Space Center Houston March 11-18 when you purchase tickets online. Lots of special activities and guests are planned for the week including the Jetsons, Ben 10, and Snake man. Enjoy movies about the space shuttle and International Space Station, watch Mission to Mars!, or take a NASA Tram Tour for a behind-the-scenes journey through NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Half-price tickets must be purchased online here and are available for a limited time. Adults tickets are $11.45 (half price) and children 4-11 are $9.45 (half price). Space Center Houston is located about 25 miles south of downtown Houston near Webster, 1601 NASA Parkway.
The Health Museum — Save money with this coupon for Buy One, Get One Half Price admission for up to 4 people (good through August 2012). Participate in Health & Wellness Week 2012 March 12-16 at The Health Museum. Each day features loads of different activities: daily dissections (heart, brain, eye), fitness demonstrations, healthy snacks, and games. Health & Wellness Expo is Thursday, March 15, 1 pm – 5 pm. Families can take part in health screenings, kid’s vision screening, complimentary chair massage, healthy food advice and more. Don’t miss Free Family Thursday from 2 pm – 5 pm with free admission for all, and UT Brain Night, March 15, 6 pm – 8 pm. Families can see a real brain and ask doctors questions. Saturday features Kick Butts Day for tobacco awareness from 10 am – 2 pm. Special events are free with daily admission: $8/adults and $6/children. 1515 Hermann Drive.
The Museum of Fine Arts — Don’t miss Free Family Thursday all day March 15! This wonderful Houston museum is offering special family activities for spring break March 11-15 such as sketching in the galleries, investigating works of art, creating works of art in the studio, and checking out family packs. Check out the spring break calendar featuring special events including Party Mix 2011 (short films for kids ages 7-14), Kid Flix Mix 2011 (short films for ages 3-6), Discover King Tut family workshop (March 13, registration required), and Exploring Japanese Art (March 15, free). Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-18. Located at 1001 Bissonnet.
