Thanksgiving is a time for being grateful for all that we have, and it’s also a great time to give back to those who need a helping hand. If you ask us, there’s no better way to get in the holiday spirit than by volunteering, and fortunately, there are tons of great Thanksgiving volunteer opportunities in Houston this year.
If you’re trying to figure out where you can volunteer this Thanksgiving, here are some of our top picks.
Thanksgiving Big Feast
Every year, this event serves over 35,000 hungry Houstonians at the George R. Brown Convention Center. While the event was originally just for the homeless, it has expanded to now also include those who are unable to be with their family on Thanksgiving or unable to afford providing a Thanksgiving meal.
Volunteers are needed both for the prep day before Thanksgiving and for serving the feast on Thanksgiving Day. Click here for more info and to sign up to volunteer.
Turkey Tailgate at Grace
The Turkey Tailgate at Grace Presbyterian Church (10221 Ella Lee Ln) is part of the bigger Operation Turkey event which serves communities across Houston. This event is held the day before Thanksgiving and volunteers are needed to smoke turkeys, load and unload ingredients, and prep everything for the Thanksgiving Day meal.
You can learn more about how to volunteer on their Facebook event page.
Thanksgiving Day at Grace
After all the hard work is done the day prior at the Turkey Tailgate, Thanksgiving Day at Grace Presbyterian Church (10221 Ella Lee Ln) is an opportunity to feed those in the community who need a meal. The event runs from 8 am to 1 pm, and volunteers are needed throughout the day.
Thanksgiving Dinner at Open Door Mission
Each year, The Mission serves Thanksgiving dinner to men and their families on campus. They are always seeking volunteers to help with prepping, serving, decorating, and more.
Thanksgiving Day at Life Church
Life Church (9901 Windmill Lakes Blvd) will also be participating in Operation Turkey this year. The event takes place from 7 am to Noon, and volunteers are needed throughout.
Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels Thanksgiving event by Interfaith Ministries helps feed over 10,000 seniors across the Houston and Galveston area. There are all sorts of ways you can volunteer — delivering meals, working to prep everything at the distribution, or helping with fundraising. There’s one distribution site in Houston (First Presbyterian Church, North Parking Lot, 5300 Main Street Houston, TX 77004) and one in LaMarque (Wayne Johnson Community Center, 4102 Main Street, LaMarque, TX 77568 for Galveston County.) that will be operating on Thanksgiving Day.
Star of Hope
The Star of Hope serves 3 meals a day, every single day of the year at all 3 of their facilities. You can volunteer any day of the year, and they also have a special Thanksgiving holiday meal. Volunteer opportunities are available for dates all throughout the year, so click here to learn more.
The Holiday Project’s Thanksgiving Day Visit
Bring the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday to those who might not be able to have their own celebration. Meet at Park Manor of Humble Senior Living facility (19424 McKay Drive, Humble, TX) on Thanksgiving Day at 10 am to visit with residents and brighten their holiday. You’ll get to hand out handmade Thanksgiving cards and simply interact with the residents to bring holiday cheer.
