1st Annual Gumbo Cookoff

What: Gumbo lovers in Galveston, come on out, and let’s feast this weekend! The first annual Galveston Elks 126 Gumbo Cookoff is here. If you want to join the festivities, get an Elk member to sign you in kind of like a chaperone at a high school dance. Once you’re in, you can enjoy tasting all the gumbo, listen to great music, join the corn hole tournament, play tons of other games, and join the dessert auction.

Movie Night: Double Feature at Galveston Island Brewing

What: Get to enjoy not just one but two box office hits this weekend at Galveston Island Brewing! The first film at 5:30 pm is about Trolls. After an invasion of their village, the happiest Troll ever born and the overly-cautious curmudgeonly troll set off on a rescue mission for their friends. And to get the job done, the duo has to tolerate each other long enough. Of course, that leads to plenty of mishaps and adventures. 

The second film is about a renowned oceanographer who’s sworn revenge on the rare shark that ate a member of his crew. On his journey for vengeance, he’s joined by a man who believes him to be his father and a journalist who has gotten pregnant by a married man. 

It’s going to be a picnic-style viewing so feel free to bring a chair or a blanket. Snacks will also be provided onsite.

What: Get ready to head out, break a sweat, and enjoy the fun and party of the 13th Annual Galveston 1/2 and Full Marathon and the Galveston 5k! The same beautiful course will remain the same so you can enjoy the beautiful sights of Galveston and East Beach as you run, walk, or job. And depending on what run you choose, you’ll be able to get either a technical long-sleeved shirt or a technical short-sleeved t-shirt. You’ll also get a finishers medal. This year, the run will benefit the Forgotten Pets Advocate and Friendswood Animal Advocates.

On Exhibit: Joey Fauerso – I Wish I Had A River at Galveston Arts Center

What: Enjoy new paintings, sculptures, videos, and site-specific installations addressing subject matters centered around family, humor, gender, figuration, and representation with Joey Fauerso’s exhibition. His works were inspired by the writings of socialist feminist Iris Marion Young, philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and the history of magic tricks involving women’s bodies. In it, he explores the ways in which depictions of bodies in stillness and action speak to women’s experiences and confinement in a patriarchal system.
