Houston has tons of great traditional summer camps to help keep your kids active, healthy, and engaged at home, but if you’re looking to practice social distancing, there are also tons of great online summer camps available this year. We’ve put together a list of the best online summer camps for kids and teens so all you have to do is sign up. Whether you’re looking for a strict schedule or just some fun activities throughout the week, we’ve got you covered.
Here are the Best Virtual Summer Camps in Houston for 2020:
If you’re looking for something totally structured, with live instruction and some of the hottest curriculum around, iD Tech is your best bet! Each camp is one week long, Monday through Friday, with an online schedule of events. Kids will learn Java, Roblox, Adobe, 3D modeling, and much more. Students can receive individualized instruction as each camp is limited to 5 campers per teacher! The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is offering virtual Summer Camps for children ages four through 12, with campers grouped in classes by age. Navigating around COVID-19, this virtual Summer Camp allows families to connect with nature from their own homes, while supporting the Arboretum’s crucial conservation and education efforts. The camp includes video lessons from Arboertum Naturalists, crafts and experiments (materials provided), live instruction, family-friendly outdoor activities, and more.
Camps run now through August 7. Themes include Survivor (learn about the skills animals, plants, and people use to survive), Wow! The Wonders of Water (explore the wonderful world of water), Creative by Nature (explore the connection between art and nature), Eat or be Eaten (the battle between predators and prey), and Spiders & Arachnids.

For kids aged 5 to 15 years old, Varsity Tutors offers a variety of virtual, week-long summer camps! Make recycled art, create a LEGO movie, learn how to investigate a mystery, learn theatre, and so much more. Each session is one week long, five days per week, for one hour per day. Best of all? These camps are 100% FREE!
The Houston Public Library has a robust summer program including creative writing, robotics, environmental designs, 3D printing, and much more. For June, July, and August, the camping day begins virtually at 8:30 am and ends between 3 – 3:30 pm. Kids will be split into groups according to age and are limited to one camp per participant per week. Best of all, Camp STREAM is totally free!
Rice University has partnered with Writers in the Schools for this intense, deep-dive creative writing camp! All you need is appropriate technology, Google Chrome, and all of your favorite writing supplies! Campers are divided by elementary and middle school, with options coming soon for High Schoolers. Each camp is Monday through Friday for half a day. The cost is $495 per camper.
The Knight School is for super-smart kids and chess lovers! You can sign up for online chess lessons, group sessions, in-person camps, or their Summer Web Camp! Conducted via Zoom, this classroom is fun, funky, and educational! Each class is limited to 36 students so that the teacher can manage the class and go on virtual chess field trips. Summer Web Camp is for kids aged 5 – 15 and is $200 per session.
Youth ages 13 – 18 are invited to learn about the Houston Grand Opera! Kids will learn how to choose an appropriate audition song, develop fluency in the International Phonetic Alphabet, practice stage movement and stage combat, strengthen their acting skills and vocals, and more! The camp runs June 16 through July 2nd on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Campers will log in from 9:30 am to 2:45 pm with multiple “breaks”. Camp starts at $400.
For campers entering 1st through 5th grade next year, the Boy Scouts have created a fun, free, online program! Live, virtual camps will be on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1 – 2 pm. There will also be rank-specific adventures to choose from, online, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 8 pm. There is no registration fee, all activities are free!
Camp Zoofari may be canceled this year, but there are still plenty of ways to keep up with the Houston Zoo! Their outreach program has gone digital, with an updated video of Zoo Tours each Monday, Fun Friday videos, pen-pals, and more. Download this Virtual Camper Creation, design your camper, then submit a photo of it to be featured online! There are new activities updated each week for kids to re-create at home. All activities are free online at their website and on Facebook.
Houston Humane Society Virtual Companion Camp
The Houston Humane Society is going Live on Facebook every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday! The show is great for kids aged 6 – 15 years old- or anyone who loves animals!
