Have you ever seen dachshunds try to run? There might not be any cuter sight. These tiny, short-legged dog breeds aren’t natural born runners, but they try their best when they have to. If you’d like to see these unlikely runners go head-to-head in adorable wiener dog races, we’ve got the event for you: the 2019 Wiener Dog Races on Saturday, May 25 at Sam Houston Race Park.
The history of the dachshund, or wiener dog, is somewhat shrouded in mystery. Some accounts say the dachshund dates all the way back to ancient Egypt, although the modern incarnation of the breed we know today appeared in Europe in the 18th century. Today, dachshunds are one of the most popular purebred breeds and are still used as hunting dogs to dig down into burrows to flush out rats and other large rodents.
There’s also one thing dachshunds are great at: racing live in front of crowds. During the 2019 Live Quarter Horse Races, over 50 wiener dogs will race down a 30-yard track in eight different races between horse races that culminate in a championship race. The winner gets $200, while the place dog gets $100.
Admission to see quarter horse racing alongside the wiener dog races is just $8 for adults and $5 for kids 13 and under and seniors 65 and older. A reserved counter seat can be purchased for just $4 more. For groups of 15 or more, call 281-807-8750 for group packages and rates.
Attendees to the 2019 Wiener Dog Races can also purchase two different meal packages at the race: the Winner’s Circle Buffet for $29.95 which includes admission, buffet including tax & gratuity, and a non-alcoholic beverage; or the Papa John’s Pizza Deal for $25 which includes 2 General Admission tickets, 2 Papa John’s Pizzas (with 4 slices in each box), and 2 small soft drinks.
Gates open at 5:30 pm on Saturday, May 25 for the second night of 2019 Wiener Dog Races, with the first horse race beginning at 7 pm and first wiener dog race around 8 pm.
