When Is School Starting in Houston & Greater Houston (2025–26)?

The 2025–26 public school year in Houston and the Greater Houston area officially kicks off for most districts during the second week of August. Houston ISD and Fort Bend ISD will start classes on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, with the academic year ending for students on June 4, 2026, and staff concluding on June 5.

Other major districts, such as Cypress, Fairbanks ISD, Katy ISD, and Conroe ISD, will begin on Wednesday, August 13.

Some districts with year-round or alternative calendars may start even earlier. For example, New Caney ISD might begin as early as August 6, and Aldine ISD schools on the year-round schedules could begin sometime in early August.

Texas Tax?Free Weekend: What Counts & How to Maximize It

Texas Tax-Free Weekend is the perfect time to stock up on school essentials without paying a cent in sales tax. That’s right, no tax, no guilt, and fewer excuses not to replace last year’s worn-out backpack.

Dates and time window

The 2025 Texas Sales Tax Holiday runs from Friday, August 8, through midnight on Sunday, August 10.

Qualifying vs excluded items

The tax-free perk applies to many school-related items under $100 (including shipping and handling fees). Think clothing, shoes, backpacks, and basic school supplies like pencils, notebooks, and binders. Even diapers and baby clothes are covered. Items such as tennis shoes, swimsuits, and jogging suits also qualify since they can be used beyond athletics.

Excluded items include anything not considered essential for school, like luggage, purses, sports gear, or computers. Specially-designed athletic or protective wear is also excluded because their wear is specific only to sports activities.

Other excluded items include umbrellas, wallets, watches, computers, software, textbooks, fabric, thread, yarn, and buttons.

Online order rules

As long as your order is placed, paid for, and shipped (or ready for pickup) between Aug 8–10, you’re eligible for tax-free status. Delivery or shipment can happen later—only the purchase time matters.

Keep in mind that shipping, handling, and delivery fees count toward the $100 cap. For example, a $95 item with a $10 shipping charge would exceed the limit and lose the exemption.

Qualifying purchases can also include those made via layaway or special orders, provided the final payment falls within the tax-free window and the item price remains under the cap.

Local economic impact

Aside from being a win for your wallet, the weekend deal is also a boost for Houston’s local retailers.

Texans have saved over $2 billion since the tradition began in 1999. For 2025, the Texas Comptroller estimates $133.2 million in state and local tax savings across the state during this three-day event, about $8 saved per $100 spent.

In Houston, the event often coincides with prime promotional weekends at major retailers and small stores alike. So if you’re shopping tax-free, consider doing it locally. You’ll be saving money and supporting the community.

Money-Saving Tips & Shopping Strategy

Houston families can make the most of the season’s promotions by combining tech-savvy tools, local knowledge, and a little strategic timing. Here are some tips to help you save big while getting everything your kids need:

  • Use digital flyers and cashback apps
Apps like Flipp, Rakuten, and RetailMeNot let you browse weekly circulars, apply digital coupons, and compare prices across Houston retailers without setting foot outside.

  • Shop early to avoid shortages
Don’t wait until Tax-Free Weekend to grab essentials. Inventory tends to run low on popular items like uniforms, backpacks, and calculators as the school year approaches.

  • Bundle smartly for Tax-Free Weekend (Aug 8–10)
Combine sales with tax-free savings by focusing on eligible items under $100, like clothes, shoes, and school supplies. Stack store coupons if allowed for maximum discounts.

  • Check local resale and consignment shops
Gently used clothes, backpacks, and even lunch boxes can be found at a fraction of the retail price at local spots in Spring, Tomball, and Humble.

  • Do a home inventory first
Before buying, go through what you already have—many families find forgotten supplies, barely-used notebooks, or hand-me-downs in great condition.

  • Sign up for store email lists
Retailers like Target, Old Navy, and H-E-B often send out exclusive deals and early access to back-to-school promotions for subscribers.

  • Use student or teacher discounts
If applicable, don’t forget to take advantage of academic discounts at places like Apple, Best Buy, and certain clothing brands.
