This vast urban park offers a variety of activities for families. Hike or bike along the scenic trails or have a picnic on the sprawling lawns. You can also rent a pedal boat from the Kinder Lake boathouse to explore the park’s serene waters. 

Beyond the trails and waterways, Buffalo Bayou Park offers several unique experiences. You and the kids can explore the Cistern, an underground reservoir with stunning architectural features and captivating art installations.

You can also wait until dusk at the park and witness the incredible, and one of my favorite sights. You can watch the Waugh Bridge Bat Colony emerging from its lair.

Aside from those, the park also hosts free weekly events such as fitness classes, boot camps, and family activities. Check their website or social media to see their upcoming events.

Memorial Park

This large park in central Houston offers something for everyone. Hike or bike on scenic trails, rent a paddleboat on the lake, or visit the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center located within the park.

If you’re visiting during the summer, don’t forget to catch a free performance during the Miller Outdoor Theatre’s summer series. This popular series features a variety of shows, including live music and movie screenings.

The park also offers plenty of activities throughout the week for the kids, so keep an eye on their website or social media for upcoming events.

Houston Arboretum and Nature Center

Keep in mind, that while entrance to the park is free, there are plenty of areas that may have minimal fees to explore. But, if you apply for membership, more areas become free to access.

Houston Area Live Steamers

The Houston Area Live Steamers invites you and your family on a thrilling journey aboard their miniature railroad. Every third Saturday of the month (and now select Sundays), you can experience the magic of steam as you chug along their 4700-foot track in Zube Park.

Run day is the third Saturday of each month, March through November, and now a few Sundays. Check the website to confirm run days.

Frolics Castle

This expansive play area features a three-story medieval castle with a drawbridge and catapults, inviting imaginations to soar.

Waugh Drive Bridge Bat Colony

Calling all nature enthusiasts! Witness a spectacular sight as millions of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from their habitat under the Waugh Drive Bridge at dusk. Viewing is free from the platform, sidewalk, or bridge.

Waugh Bat Colony Boat Tours require a reservation and fee.

The best bat viewing occurs from mid-May to mid-October, typically around 30 minutes after sunset. I recommend arriving early to secure a good spot, as the viewing area can get crowded. Also, be prepared for mosquitos and bring bug spray.

Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark

The 30,000-square-foot concrete jungle allows kids of any level to grind, roll, and skate. It has mellow inclines, mini ramps, a snake run, bowls, and a street skating area.

If your kids don’t have wheels of their own, they can rent a skateboard or scooter on-site. Of course, don’t forget their helmets and pads.

Bike Ride at Buffalo Bayou

If you don’t have your own bike, you can rent bikes and helmets from several places. You can even join free bike tours. 

After the tiring activity, head over to Sesquicentennial Park for a wonderful park.

Adventures at the 7-acre Wood Farm

The kiddos can run wild at 7 Acre Wood. There’s a mini golf course with whimsical figurines and playful obstacles and a petting zoo with goats, chickens, and miniature horses.
