Today’s Memorial Day Events highlights in Houston

One of the most moving tributes today is the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Harris County War Memorial in Bear Creek Pioneers Park. Starting at 2:30 PM, Commissioner Lesley Briones will lead a ceremony honoring Harris County residents who gave their lives in service from WWI to the present. It’s a beautiful spot for reflection, but we recommend arriving at least 20 minutes early to find parking near the War Memorial section of the park.

If you’re hoping to snag one of the 50 commemorative dash plaques, you’ll want to be there right at opening! Meanwhile, the 18th Annual Memorial Day “Tribute to Heroes and Freedom” in The Woodlands offers a full patriotic program starting at 10:00 AM, featuring a moving Parade of Wreaths and guest speakers at Forest Park.

If you’re near the coast, the Memorial Day Ceremony at Galveston Naval Museum begins at 11:00 AM. It’s a unique opportunity to pay respects while surrounded by historic naval vessels. Closer to the city, the Memorial Day Hero Salute in Kingwood is an early-morning race for those wanting to honor the holiday with a spirited run or walk starting at 4:00 AM.

What to Expect Today – Monday, May 25, 2026 in Houston

Traffic is expected to be heavy as travelers return home, with the “return crunch” predicted between 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM. If you can, try to be on the road before 10:00 AM to avoid the worst congestion. Keep an eye out for local street closures in the downtown area, specifically around the Congress Street Bridge and sections of Texas Avenue and Rusk Street, which are slated for ongoing event-related closures.
