lights in the heights

This is a post from 2020. Check out our latest version of the Lights in the Heights Guide 2021!

Driving around neighborhoods looking for stunning Christmas lights is a tradition for many families. Just like everything else in the state, we go big on lights in Texas. What better neighborhood to take your family on a trip through than the Heights?

The Heights offers some great opportunities for viewing holiday lights, and its annual Lights in the Heights event is always a favorite with locals. It’s one of the best places to see Christmas lights in Houston this year!

Of course, things are a bit different this year with the ongoing pandemic, and like so many other events, Lights in the Heights has been forced to adapt to the new reality.

This year, the in-person Lights in the Heights event won’t be taking place as normal. While the neighborhood will be decorated as always for your enjoyment throughout the holiday season, the actual event where everyone gets together to walk the neighborhood, celebrate the season, and enjoy all the different houses will take place differently this year. Instead, the committee behind the event and local residents have come together to find new ways to keep the spirit of the event alive with things like self-guided scavenger hunts (goes live Dec 11-26), showcasing decorated homes on social media, and still awarding the best decorated houses.

“The LITH Chairs and the Civic Association Board have agreed that postponing all the live events would be the most socially responsible thing to do. Protecting the neighborhood and our wonderful residents is being prioritized this year,” event organizers said in a blog post. “However! The event will still be there in spirit since we’ll have the house awards and will also be supplementing with several social media and social distancing endeavors…We’re excited to redesign the event to fit the current climate.”

Your best bet this year is to enjoy all the beautifully decorated homes in the Woodland Heights neighborhood from the safety of your car, and there’s sure to be plenty to see all throughout the month of December.

Also important to note is that this is completely free. Since this is all just neighborhood decorations and a Christmas celebration with Houstonians and visitors alike, all are welcome to attend for no cost. This is definitely a must-do cheap trip for the books, especially if you have young kids fascinated with lights and extravagant decorations.

Just please remember that this is a neighborhood where people live, so drive carefully and act courteously. Respect private property.
