MLK Parade Houston 2026

This year’s MLK Parade Houston is going to be bigger than ever! The city’s two biggest MLK parades, the MLK Grande Parade and the Original MLK Parade, are uniting as one for the first time in 30 years in Downtown Houston, and I can’t wait!

This year’s theme is about unity, justice, and inclusion with a special focus on health awareness related to sickle cell disease. 

Expect to see radio host Madd Hatta at the helm as Grand Marshall, together with Debora Nixon and Freddie Jackson as co-grand marshals. Following them, there will be community groups, lively performance entrie,s and colorful themed floats.

Children’s Museum Houston celebrates three decades of honoring the civil rights leader with its 30th Annual MLK Day Celebration.

This immersive, kid-led program features a powerful reenactment of the “I Have a Dream” speech by actor Steve Scott and a Peace March through Kids’ Hall led by the museum’s own Kids’ Committee.

Families like yours and mine can also enjoy a full day of inspiration with live music from Dr. Kiana Williams, speed painting by Ange Hillz, and creative workshops where children can craft dove garlands and “dream” cloud art centered on unity and hope.


Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center

Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy at the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center with a day of reflection and creativity.

This year’s program features a variety of hands-on workshops and story sessions designed to inspire kindness and hope in young learners. Highlights include a Peace Flower workshop, the creation of unity-themed dove garlands, and “dream” cloud artwork.


MLK Freedom Run 5K/10K/13.1 Houston

The MLK Freedom Run at Eleanor Tinsley Park invites participants of all abilities to honor Dr. King’s message of justice and peace. This citywide event offers 5K, 10K, and 13.1-mile routes in a supportive community atmosphere.

Registered participants receive a custom runner’s t-shirt, a finisher’s towel, and a medal. If you’re not running, you can attend to cheer on the runners. 


The City-Wide MLK Choir Fellowship Celebration

Experience the uplifting power of gospel music and community spirit at the MLK City-Wide Choir Fellowship Celebration. Hosted by the Black Heritage Society and led by Bishop James Dixon II, this gathering serves as a cornerstone of Houston’s MLK Weekend.

The event focuses on spiritual reflection and collective joy, honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through powerful vocal performances and fellowship.


Martin Luther King Jr. Day at The Woodlands Methodist Church

The Woodlands community invites the public to the 37th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration. This year’s program features keynote speaker Jason Skaer, Chief Strategic Officer at The Church Project, alongside an invocation by Vincent Piper of Impact Church and a formal Presentation of Colors by the Oak Ridge High School Color Guard.

The ceremony will also celebrate local excellence with the presentation of the 2025 Drum Major Award and the recognition of MLK Scholarship recipients.

Aside from that, there will also be a moving series of musical performances by the MLK Children’s Mass Choir, the MLK Adult Mass Choir, and the Resound Special Needs Ministry Choir that I know you won’t want to miss.


MLK Jr. Vigil

Rice University’s Office of Public Affairs, in partnership with the Rice Black Men’s Association and Multicultural Community Relations, welcomes the Houston community to a free vigil honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The evening begins with a reception at 3:30 PM, followed by the formal program at 4:00 PM, featuring reflections on Dr. King’s enduring legacy of peace and justice.


YMCA MLK Day of Service

Honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by giving back through the YMCA MLK Day of Service. On Monday, January 19, 2026, YMCA branches across the Greater Houston area will mobilize volunteers for various community improvement projects.

These opportunities range from outdoor beautification to providing essential services for vulnerable populations, embodying Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

2026 MLK Day of Service at Hope Farms

This annual event provides a unique opportunity to help transform Hope Farm’s seven-acre urban farm from its winter dormancy into a state of spring readiness while building lasting connections between neighbors.

Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate in various tasks designed to rejuvenate the space, such as winter cleanup, garden bed preparation, and tree planting.

Additionally, participants can assist with landscape renewal, spring flower planting, light construction, and the building of new farm infrastructure. 


2026 MLK Day Speeches & Gospels

Throughout the day, this iconic Houston landmark will play influential speeches from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., including “I Have a Dream” and “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop.” Local gospel choirs will also perform musical selections inspired by his words, creating a resonant experience within the chapel’s quiet sanctuary.
