Founded in 1948, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston stands out as a non-profit institution dedicated to making contemporary art accessible to everyone. The museum is committed to providing emerging artists with space to bring their art to the world, whether that’s painting, sculpture, photography, video, performance, or large-scale installations.

Some of their most notable exhibitions include works by Texas-raised artist Vincent Valdez and abstract political storytelling by Tomashi Jackson.

They also periodically rotate their exhibitions, so every visit can reveal new perspectives and artworks. And on Thursday evenings, they offer extended hours for late-night art exploration.

Houston Center for Photography

Founded in 1981 as a member- and artist-run cooperative and officially incorporated as a nonprofit in 1982, the Houston Center for Photography has become a cornerstone among Houston museums and creative institutions. It serves as both a gallery and an educational hub dedicated to the art and craft of photography.

The center offers a year-round calendar of exhibitions, seminars, and programs that highlight diverse photographic perspectives and techniques. Its state-of-the-art Learning Center, opened in 2006, features a Digital Darkroom equipped with high-end printers and scanners, a professional Lighting Studio, and a Critique Room where classes and members can refine their skills through collaboration and feedback.

Photography enthusiasts can also explore the John Cleary Library, which is home to more than 4,000 books and journals devoted to photography. Additionally, the center publishes SPOT magazine twice a year, providing critical insights and documentation on contemporary photography and related media.

Lawndale Art Center

Founded in 1979 by artist James Surls, the Lawndale Art Center has established itself as one of the most dynamic and experimental venues among Houston museums and art spaces. 

Each year, Lawndale showcases close to 500 artists, providing a vital platform for emerging and mid-career talent, including locally renowned names and collectives such as the Otabenga Jones Collective. Its reputation for flexibility and innovation has made it a cornerstone of Houston’s creative community, and a favorite museum of mine.

Beyond its exhibitions, Lawndale hosts a rich array of public programs from lectures and symposia to film screenings, readings, and live performances. Some of their signature annual events worth going to include the Día de los Muertos celebration, the Big Show juried exhibition, and the Lawndale Design Fair.

The Menil Collection

Moody Center for the Arts

Despite opening just in 2017, I think the Moody Center for the Arts has quickly earned a place among the most innovative Houston museums. In 2024, it was named Houston’s best free museum by the Houston Press, a recognition that reflects its growing impact as a vibrant space where innovation and artistic expression converge.

The museum features flexible gallery spaces, a 150-seat black box theatre, maker labs for wood and metal work, paint booths, rapid prototyping stations, studio classrooms, audio-visual editing booths, and a welcoming café.

Its programming encompasses art exhibitions, performances, sensory immersive installations, and hands-on public art projects such as intricate sand mandalas.

Founded in 1917, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) stands as the oldest art museum in Texas and one of the most distinguished Houston museums today. Its vast and diverse collection spans over 6,000 years of history and includes around 70,000 works from six continents.

Visitors like you and me can explore European, American, African, Asian, and Latin American art alongside extensive collections of photography, costumes, and English decorative arts. Among its most prized holdings are the John and Audrey Jones Beck Collection, featuring Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces by some of history’s most celebrated painters.

Beyond its permanent collection, MFAH is renowned for hosting blockbuster exhibitions that draw national and international attention.

Houston Center For Contemporary Craft

Located in Houston’s Museum District, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) stands out among Houston museums for its focus on craft as a vital and evolving art form. It showcases contemporary craft through exhibitions that highlight materials such as clay, fiber, glass, wood, metal, and even found or recycled objects.

Each year, the center hosts 5–10 resident artists, allowing visitors to witness the creative process firsthand. Past highlights include Judy Jensen: Feverish (2002) and the CraftTexas juried shows that celebrate excellence in modern craft across the state.

Adding to its unique charm, HCCC features a Craft Garden, an outdoor space offering visitors a deeper appreciation for creativity rooted in both material and environment.

The Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park

Founded in 1954 by a group of dedicated Houstonians determined to save the 1847 Kellum-Noble House, the city’s oldest masonry residence still standing on its original foundation, the Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park has become one of the most historically rich destinations among Houston museums. 

Spanning nearly 20 acres, the park features beautifully restored historic homes relocated to the site. Visitors can step into Houston’s early days through living history exhibits, guided tours, and engaging educational programs. As one of only two Asia Society centers in the U.S. with its own dedicated building, the Texas Center welcomes visitors to explore a variety of experiences. The museum’s early collections featured natural history specimens and an impressive gem and mineral collection donated by John Milsaps.

Today, HMNS continues to inspire curiosity and discovery through its vast exhibits and interactive learning spaces. Space Center Houston

As the control hub for historic NASA missions, including Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz, and the Space Shuttle programs, the Space Center Houston was where the iconic words “Houston, the Eagle has landed” were first heard during the Apollo 11 mission, marking humanity’s first steps on the moon.

Today, the center remains a vital part of NASA’s operations, supporting astronaut training, research, flight control, and mission management for programs such as the International Space Station.
