Zoo Lights at the Houston Zoo turns the zoo into a sparkling holiday wonderland each year. After the animals settle in for the evening, visitors can enjoy a nighttime experience filled with millions of LED lights, interactive displays, and themed installations.
Since its debut in November 2017, Zoo Lights has grown into one of Houston’s must-see holiday events. Sponsored by TXU Energy, the event started with 300,000 LED lights and creative zones like Candy the Zebra, a 33-foot Holiday Tree, and themed areas highlighting Texas and festive train villages.
Now, it has grown larger, even offering extended hours on prime nights and becoming a cherished annual tradition.
Guests can explore playful zones like the Neon Playground, Holiday Grove with dancing fountains, the Enchanted Forest, Winter Wonderland with snow effects, and Geo-Prism Safari.
Signature highlights include the Whimsical Wildlife Tree, Santa’s Workshop for photos through late December, and the Yuletide Lodge pop-up bar. For a calmer experience, sensory-friendly bypass paths offer quieter strolls while high-energy zones feature music, projections, and lively activity.

Parking, Arrival Tips & Entry Experience

Parking & Getting There
-
The Houston Zoo does not have its own exclusive parking lot. Instead, visitors use free and public parking lots in Hermann Park. These lots can fill quickly during Zoo Lights nights, so it helps to arrive early or consider alternate travel.
-
Paid parking garages and paid public lots in the surrounding area, such as those near a hospital or a museum, as well as District garages, offer good alternatives if the free Hermann Park lots are full.
-
A simple way to skip the parking headache is to use a rideshare service or public transit. The METRORail Red Line stops near Hermann Park. From there, you can walk through the Commons to the zoo entrance, which takes roughly 5–10 minutes.
Tickets & Entry
-
“Flex pricing” is in effect, so booking early often gets you a better price. Tickets tend to cost more on weekends or holidays.
-
Once you buy a ticket, your entry time slot shows up on it. You can arrive any time after that for entry and enjoy the lights until closing.
-
Bring your digital ticket on your mobile device. The Zoo scans it at the entrance, eliminating the need for a paper printout.
Arrival & What to Expect
-
Show up a little earlier than your ticket time. This provides a buffer for parking or unexpected arrival delays. Early arrival also increases your chance of easier parking.
-
Wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately. The venue is outdoors, and you’ll do a fair amount of walking on lit but sometimes uneven paths.
-
If you’ve got kids or want a more relaxed pace, the Zoo offers stroller and scooter rentals. These make moving around easier and more fun.
-
Bring a reusable water bottle. The Zoo Lights event lets guests bring non-alcoholic drinks and water. Filling stations are available, which helps if you plan a longer stroll.
Timing & Crowd Tips
-
Try to arrive early in the evening, right when the lights start, for fewer crowds and a smoother experience.
-
On busy nights (weekends and holidays), parking spaces and lines tend to fill quickly, so early arrival or alternate transport helps avoid those peak-time hassles.

Visitor Tips for the Best 2025 Experience
-
Buy tickets early — online only. Tickets aren’t sold at the gate. Buying ahead usually gets you a better price and guarantees your entry for busy nights.
-
Arrive early and plan your route. Parking around Hermann Park fills up quickly on busy Zoo Lights nights. To avoid delays, arrive a bit before your ticket time, plan where to park, or consider using public transit or a ride-share.
-
Use alternate transport or ride-share if possible. The zoo recommends considering nearby garages, public transit, or rideshare services to avoid parking stress.
-
Dress for a walking night outdoors. Expect a lot of walking on paths through the zoo. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the evening weather.
-
Bring a reusable water bottle. Water filling stations are available, and outside food/drinks (except glass or alcohol) are allowed.
-
Consider pre-ordering food or bringing snacks. Lines can get long for treats, especially on busy nights. Pre-ordering or bringing your own snacks helps avoid delays.
-
Use the zoo’s digital map on your phone. It helps you find new displays, plan your path, and locate food stands or amenities easily.
-
Give yourself time — don’t rush. Many families spend 2–3 hours exploring all the lights, displays, and photo spots. Allow time to wander, take photos, and enjoy the experience.
-
Follow zoo rules and respect animals’ space. Zoo Lights focuses on lights and displays, so many exhibits will be closed or dimmed. Avoid shining flashlights or camera flashes toward enclosures, and stay on designated paths.
